i find this discussion very sad im from germany. in our country patriotism is very difficult as you can imagine. most people have no opinion on it, but those who have are mostly very extreme in both directions. but the last years i find more and more people, who wish for that kind of patriotism as it was described by Gravity first.
I find it hard to understand, this feeling of pride. in my opinion you can only be proud of things, that you did and not your country or your school, or whoever. if you did sth very good i find it very healthy to be proud of it, but nobody has any influence on where he is born, so how can i be proud of it?
and for the flags: i dont like them. they are a symbol for countries, which have borders to seperate from other human beeings. borders cause the most problems in the world.
i dont have a problem with people who love their homeland and its cool if you try to show other people how great it is, but flags are really annoying and anything but peaceful to me.

Basically, I mean every country has done fucked up things in its past, but most are either distant enough or not severe enough that the general good can overcome them. Having WW2 on your shoulders from only 65 years ago is a bit of a thing to carry, especially since it was fueled by massive German nationalism.
