I'm referring to the bottom half of the sides. I'm curious, because this seems to be the only area where mine hasn't started locking (at about 20 months in)...I know a lot of people shave the sides of their heads, but I'd rather not if it will dread eventually.

it should dread eventually, do you run your fingers through that area a lot? also, pictures would be useful

I might pull that area down from time to time, as my hair is curly and it looks really weird if I don't stretch it out a bit. I don't run my fingers through it though. I have pictures in my profile.

I use either baking soda or Dr. Bronner's. With baking soda, I'll just dump a cup of water/baking soda over my head and work it into my scalp...with Dr. Bronner's/water I'll just work that into my scalp instead of dumping it over my head. I hardly use the Dr. B's as much anymore, since I have 'hard water' in my house and it makes for a waxy film residue no matter what I seem to do. I'm a bit frustrated that they aren't further along after 20 months...:(

Baking soda is cool. How often do you wash um?

Yea, I'm sorry to hear that... I don't really know why that would be other than "the fuckin' way she goes" I'm @ about 21 months: afoolonadread thread. Now I wish I hadn't 'encouraged' my hair to dread the way I did in the beginning, but it might be helpful for you. I wanted the top of my head to be dreading the way the back was already doing so I would rub the palm of my hand in a circular motion on the top of my head where the hair was still untangled. That and remembering to keep my fingers out of it at all times got things going for me.

or you could do that :D

I wash once a week. Maybe, I should wash twice a week? (I have to rip at least a few apart after each wash, so that must be a good sign)

Man, those pictures of your dreads look a lot like mine...cool, to see someone with the same size locks...mine aren't as long or as knotted though. I have a feeling they will do better as they gain a couple more inches...

meh, once a week should be good, but it depends on if you're doing stuff to get your hair dirty.

Maybe they just need to grow longer...the hair underneath my dreads (on the sides), isn't as long...

I have to stop mine from dreading because I like the look of it and when it starts to knot because the pull is kind of uncomfortable. I'd say it would dread over time but then everyone is different. Some people I've seen who've had dreads for 7 years still have loads of loose hair around their neck and face and others would have none after having dreads for 2 years!
You could encourage it to dread if you don't want it to though
