Thats a question I have been asking myself a lot lately.
What are we, as a generation, a culture, a race, doing?
Where are we headed? We see countless negative effects of
technology on the world (yes there are some positives but they
mostly just advance the human race) yet we strive and strive
    to produce bigger better technology.
I know I don't like the way the world looks right now.
But what am I doing to change things?
    How about you?
    I'm deffinatly open to ideas.

  2. Ultimately, I think it's the manufacturer and not the consumer who is to blame. You're forced to exist in this society in a reasonable fashion. If some dumb fucker out there can't realize it when he's destroying the earth, okay.

I try to live as simply as possible and hope to increase my efficiency at this as I have the means. I forfeit control. Let other people go.

right now, the trends are pointing to an apocalypse, and maybe even extinction of most, or all life on earth!
if you want to change the trends, you need to form the political will to make it happen. that will is in the process of formation... from all the information i have, it is happing way, way, way too slowly to advoid disaster, or even worst.
no one knows for sure, because the future is un-written.

Society isn't collectively going anywhere and it never will. For society to do so we would all have to have similar goals, similar values, and work towards them, and that would be ridiculous. Maybe you should stop worrying about society as a whole and focus on yourself and those around you and that will be a start.

not quite. what ALL OF US TOGATHER ACTUALLY DO, adds up to create the incentives that motivate the decisions that get made that create the conditions each of us individually experience.

far from never going anywhere, it's ALWAYS evolving. the problem is that individual emotional attatchment to trying to impress each other, creates the incentives that motivates it to evolve in directions that distroy rather then create, the kinds of conditions, situations and opportunities, for real people, places and things, to find, or even persue, real gratification.

    That post is horribly incoherent.

In response to "what are we doing?" my only response is "I know what I'm doing." And that's all that is worth discussing, as what we are all doing as a collective is far too abstract and intangible a topic to discuss.

I think you mean to discuss what we ought to be doing, or possibly what we ought not to be doing.

So, here's my explanation (I didn't come up with this all by myself) and recommendation:

The world is screwed up because:
Everyone has a voice talking to them in their heads. They believe, since they've heard this voice as long as they can remember, that voice is them. But it isn't. It's the same voice talking in everyone's head, saying only slightly different things to each of us. It tells us about desire, fear and anger. And since we think that's us talking to ourselves, we tend to follow that voice. And following it, we create all the problems of society.

The voice isn't evil, though. It's just the voice of the prison guard. We're in prison, and that voice has the job of keeping us here. It's our job not to silence that voice, but to free ourselves from its influence. Do what our fear tells us not to do. Resist doing what our desire tells us to do. Stop worrying about the approval of others, our pride or even our rights. In short, stop believing that this life is so important that it's worth screwing up the whole world in the hopes of keeping our own lives straight (which is just patently crazy, but that's what we all do all the time).

So long as we can be counted on to avoid what we fear (no matter how irrational that fear might be) and do anything to get what we desire (never mind that none of it will last and none of it will go with us when we die) we will be slaves and prisoners.

As soon as we embrace our pain, let go of our fear and stop letting our desire and anger rule our lives, we will be free. And, in that freedom, we will find real love for ourselves and all people and all the universe.

It won't happen to everyone all at once, but it will happen to each of us eventually. As soon as we realize that voice is the only enemy in the world, our work of freeing ourselves and setting things right in our individual lives can begin.

you can make personal choices to deviate from what most people see as "progress" but it's discouraging to know that developed civilizations will continue moving in whatever directions they will. i don't know that it's possible to halt or redirect the "advancement."

We are flushing our society down the toilet.
We are heading to socialist society where no one wants to take care of themselves - they want to be taken care of and not to worry about anything.
You're prolly just getting stoned and watching it all happen.
Writing my elected officials every chance I get and encouraging others to do the same.

What we need is a better understanding of the world, especially of human psychology. The solution is to understand ourselves. What we need is curious, creative and happy people.

Science is not to be misunderstood with material wealth. Chronologically they happened in the same time, but science is the love of understanding, of having a clear vision of reality. Material wealth is just... a consequence. Take some or leave some it's your choice.

What we need is to love life. It's been said countless times, but it's likely to be true. Love of life could be the first step to solving most interpersonal, social, economic, cultural and military problems.

It's both who are to blame...the manufacturer who makes the things that are messing with our planet and the consumer who buys it all...if there is no demand, then the product wouldn't be made anymore...so stop buying things people!
And even though there is new "green" ways of living, these proucts seem to do nothing at all- they are usually packaged way too much and that plastic oes where? In the dump. We as a society think that we are doing "good", even when we're not

well the market is created statistically from all of us, by the things that are really important to us we don't even tell ourselves, let alone anyone else, yet demonstrate every day by our behaviors.

of course people who exploit this push, often knowingly, and perfectly well awaire of the harm being caused by doing so, in the direction of making and keeping the economic exploitation of gullibility as easy and convenient for themselves as they possibly can.

can you blame them? yes you can. can you do something more effective then blame actually about it? yes, we can all do that too, by the examples we set for each other and not taking so much for granted about them.

I belief humankind is the god the creator of a new sentient being that will die only if the universe does that is our spirit within artificial intelligence.

And in the end what is it to life but just being it.

i do not know about creators.
i know there are invisible things that love us and wish us well.
one of more of them may have created something
but that is less our immediate concern

    then that
we have a challenge, to build harmony,
that our physical survival as well as our mental health and happiness,
are rapidly coming to depend upon.

    I think we're in a transition period.

And to the one dude. We definately do move as a society. As soon as you connect two human begins together their minds and behaviors start to meld (whether they love or hate each other). This is basic. If you don't understand this than your observation skills are weak at best.

Going from highly corrupted => total corrupted. Somewhere during or after these two states it will eventually break down. And after that point (hopefully) people will build the future from the ground up while avoiding the mistakes of the past.

There's still a lot of sleepwalkers out there who want 5 cars, a mansion, and a yacht. But there's also a lot of people who make it their missions to search for the truth in life and be an embodiment of truth.

Fast forward 50,000 years we would have morphed into something unrecognisable to what we are today, none of this shit will matter. Human kind in the 21st century will just amount to one paragraph in the history of the universe

Amen. But we can only exist in one place and that's NOW. In 50,000 years we could be harvesting planets for fuel, have intergalactic politics, and have problems unimagined. Yet we can only take one step at a time and face each new problem as we create it.

I've never heard it better put than this. Fix this and the political problems will sort themselves out. Meditation and honest self-reflection helps.

for when i go back to school id like the find a way to get other kids informed, ultimately its my generation that's going to be either in control taken control by china or something. And if we are in control then kids better start giving a f*ck, its sad because most of them take their education for granted. therefore everyone should experience what it's like to be out of school to help understand the situation more, i think if schools and communites made a change for the better then id feel a bit more happy. Another thing id like to see is people stop talking about the freaking past and present. Imagine if everyone just discussed the future!! like at those TED confrences... they still give me hope for humanity. There are A LOT of extrmely smart, talented, hard working people with all the same hopes and dreams we have. Its just that the system is so f***ed up if any change happens it has to be in a way that goes with the system.

Most of the things people want are on TV. The TV tells us who we are, what we want, how to act, what to say, and how to say it. Most people don't know what they're doing and have grown too apathetic to care. Do some drugs, have some sex, and start living a fun life =)
