everyone should come over. we can go to SF, there's a science museum that has an quake simulator. we can all 'ride' it.
we also have trailer parks that get hit by tornadoes :leaving: http://www.metronews.ca/ottawa/cana...h-midland-ont-trailer-park-but-injuries-minor
Holy Crap I'm so glad all my HF's ontarians are ok. I didnt even know about it, I was sick so I never listened to the radio when I was driving home from work.
The Earthquake was felt throughout New England and Upstate New York and some buildings were even evacuated when they began to shake The bedrock throughout this area is granitic and plutonic and even an earthquake in southern canada can be felt locally. Hotwater
Well according to the one map at; http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/us/2010xwa7/us/index.html At least 60 people felt it up around here... As I mentioned somewhere else, if I did feel it, I just passed it off as the guy's working with the machines outside... lol About earthquakes in general... if the vibrations are lateral (side to side) where you are, then the lower you are in a building, the less you will notice it. As you get higher in a building, there is more sway. Think of a stack of glasses that is really high, a little shake at the bottom will cause a huge shift at the top... If the shocks are vertical in nature, then it doesn't matter much one way or another, although you would still have more vibrations at the top of taller buildings...
during that big northridge quake about ten years ago or more i was in simi valley. i had this long drawn out dream about being placed in a huge bronze tower with platforms all around it and then hundreds of safrron robed monks started beating on the brass tower making it vibrate and shake really bad and then i woke up to the earthquake. it was a hoot!
Simi valley where they rendered the rodney king verdict and triggered off one of the worst riots in US history Good times back then Hotwater
My step grampa was in the country south of SF during the BIG one in 1906. He said his bed crashed into the wall and woke him and he staggered outside and saw that the ground was heaving like the ocean! When the earthquake hit in Tehachapi (south of Bakersfield) in 1952,I awoke to the barking of dogs about 5:30 in the morning. My dad was reading ,so I asked him why the dogs were barking all over town. He said he didn't know, but they had been barking for an hour and had awakened him. Just after he said it--it sounded like truck loads of gravel were being dumped on the roof. Earthquake! We hauled down stairs and out into the street. Spooky. The house we were in was actually built in 1916 by my great grandparents from bricks hauled down from the 1906 quake in SF. It was double wall brick or it might have come down. I've been in some other ones---just ride 'em out.
Well my dogs are back to normal now but last night they were still fussy. My son's poor bird is not talking at all. She talks constantly and it seems odd to have her so quiet. I hope she gets over it soon.
With hindsight, yes. My 6 daschunds did not want to spend time outside and that is unusual. I have 3, 8 week old pups that did not seemed to be fazed. I usually open the door and they all bolt and bark and they did not ask to go out much yesterday morning. My Chinese Shar pei is rather laid back and did not seem to react as much other than pant when it happened and fret for a few hours after. My son's bird is still flipped out. She is a budgie and she does actually say words and is saying nothing....really weird.
There was a man that did a study of newspaper ads concerning runaway pets. He thought he could predict earthquakes by the increased number of pets that panicked and disappeared hours and even days before a quake. Can't remember his name or I would referance it to see if he was on to something. Seemed like he was ,but it's been 20 years since I read about him so----
After yesterday, I think I would agree with him. The dogs did not settle until really late last night, they did not even eat their dinner. The bird is another story. She may be enjoying all the attention though as my son has had her out constantly trying to get her to talk to him.
