    • Baking Soda (not homemade, but I assume that you really mean: shampoopoop alternative)
    • When they are dirty
    • Why don't you grow some and find out?

I'm already growing them. If they are to thin I can combine them can't I?

Well i wanted dreads for a year or two now. I was going to do backcomb method and then i looked around and learned that neglect was the way i wanted to do. They look nicer in my opinion and I would feel more connected to them. Then about two weeks ago i lost my comb and didn't comb my hair for a week then i realized my hair was getting knotty so i decided this is the perfect time to start. Also another reason is I want to get rid of as many chemicals in my hair. Don't get me wrong I've been researching neglect and just need simple help sometimes its hard to get an answer just by googling and running through the forums here. Also I like to get answers directed at me to help me out if you know what I mean.

yup, but for reals read the FAQ. Getting started with natural locks is pretty simple... keep your hair clean, keep your fingers out of it, don't stress because eventually it will all dread. There are ways to influence the size of your locks even if you are growing them instead of 'installing' them, but I would suggest you just go for it and see what happens. There shouldn't be buyers remorse or anything because you're growing them out of your own body...:D
