What was your original motive in starting locks?
Is it still the same now?

Mine was from wanting to be like a groovy skater...then it changed into just being a hippie who hates cutting his hair :p

This thread has been done 1,000 times. I don't have dreads, so I can't respond.

I adopted a family of possums but had no where to keep them.
Dreads seemed like the perfect home.

'Cause I'm half black and look like I'm Hispanic/Pacific Islander/ Middle Eastern when I have short hair. Dreadlocks exentuate my African features. Also, the black half is from the Carribean. Fuck yeah.

Just always been fascinated by them and wanted them for a long time, but couldn't get them while I was at school.

I haven't cut my hair but I've been switching off between washing with bronners and regular shampoo. So I'm letting my hair grow and will take it from there.

I suppose I'll answer this seriously :biggrinjester: At first I wanted dreadlocks because it was something I had always thought about wearing (the idea started with braids...) when I was a kid I really liked this look for some reason:
After thinking about it and talking to some heads I realized that getting dreads would not be as fun or interesting as growing locks.

I didn't even consider paying for them or waxing them and at first I didn't really know how people ended up with locks because of all the instadread backcomb wax barf hype that's been going on the last decade. When it comes to things I want I'm not that impatient and I quickly decided that locks that are grown not only look better (to me) but they say something (to me) about a person.
    /rant

I had just seen my sister's hair starting to dread naturally... I was about to be out of college and felt like I had the time and freedom to devote to the act of not brushing my hair :D...

...unfortunately I 'did things' to my hair while it was dreading that I wouldn't do were I to start again, but I don't think you can learn about anything without making a few mistakes.

Over the years growing them I've learned a great deal about myself and how I want to live my life. When it comes down to it it's about power. On a silly level, the human hair can suspend up to three ounces and each of my locks has thousands of hairs in it, you do the math... and on a serious level, part of having locks for me is that I do what I want. There are plenty of things that people may think I should or shouldn't do, but in the end I'm going to do what's right for me.

You could rent out locks to families of small furry creatures for money...or food...use them for rope?

I like this, very nice quote.

My reasons are around the same. My style in general gets me stereo-typed really quick so.... Letting my hair knot into dreads is like a big "fuck you" to the materialistic people who thrive on "fitting in" and pre-judging people before you get to know them. I think Locks are sexy, on both females and males and really respect people who can think and be happy on their own (seems like these qualities are pre-reqs for growing locks). I am on a journey of my soul (quit my job, sold a lot of my "stuff" and am going back to school to pursue a career that I can truly love... that will keep me in touch with my planet and in the woods) and enjoy how the locking process is really letting me get to know me......

Since I've been letting it knot (only 3 weeks... not long but the internal effects are profound), I've meet more genuine people that share my ideas and ideologies then I did when I had "combed, clean" hair. Cleansing my soul is only making my life better.

i left my brush at a hotey in cali. came back to the east coast... not wanting to buy another... said fuck it and hey... locks started forming and voila... 7 months later i am starting to look like i got something going on back there other than a birds nest.
plus my boyfriend was sick of me playing with his locks... all the time.... so i got my own to play with. plus i like the people i attract having this style. its like im a walking peace sign or something....

Mezz i liked your last part. i've had my dreads for seven months, i put them in for many reasons, i always thought they were cool and i was tired of people only ever complimenting me for how beautiful my straight blond hair was so i knotted it into something i think is even more beautiful. i've met a lot of amazing people since i've had my dreads, i'm studying abroad in Chile right now and have had conversations with people about dreads, just random people on the street, they probably never would have talked to me if i still had my "normal" hair. my dreads are part of me and a much better representation of who i am.
