Do people that have used opiates before have any dificulty in getting some effects from salvia?

I heard that some people need many times of smoking before they can feel some effects from it.

My first time i used 5x and from the first smoke i felt the effects, and i have used opiates before.

So i guess i am asking if people that have used opiates before experience this reverse-tolerance from salvinorin.Or maybe it is just a question of smoking it right.

I used opiates heavily for three years, then quit for about a year before I tried smoking salvia.

I definetly got effects the first few times I smoked salvia. However, those effects were nothing compared to the effects that I get now.

I didnt really "break through" with salvia until my 4 or 5th time. Once I broke through, the effects were greatly magnified... the shear intensity of the experience was missing those first few times.

Why? I dunno... but it seems to happen to a lot of people.

    Hmm...sounds interesting...i don't think i have broken trough yet...

So does this reverse-tolerance theory mean no effects at first or no brake-trough...?I always thought it meant effects...

Did you break-trough with the same amount of plant you usauly smoked or did you use more the first time you broke trough?

I think maby you have something here....i have never done any opiates and it took me 3 times to get salvia to work. I also have friends that never got effects there first time, and they had never used any opiates.

Ive only had trip effects 3 times, every time gets much more intense:eek:

So Salvinorin is similar in some regards to THC or DMT insofar as that it requires a sort of build-up effect to reach a place where the effects really kick in, and like the latter of the two aforementioned, it gets better with each progressive ingestion of the stuff?

As for the notion that opiates block out its effects, there may be a grain of truth to this. I don't know, but I've smoked Salvia divinorum countless times, at varying strengths, and have yet to *totally* go all wonky from it yet, and I hafta take pain pills daily for chronic back pain.

Anyway, I haven't given up on the stuff, my only hope is to sooner-than-later find pure or close to pure Salvinorin A crystals.

From my limited understanding of how Salvinorin A works in the brain, it doesn't have as much to do with cross-tolerance from opiates as it does the way you smoke it and if you're sensitive enough to it to bring on the full effects. I'm still reading up on it and trying to understand why it's such a fickle substance, I haven't figured it out yet (no one has really) I just know that it is.

I've only smoked salvia twice in my life. The first time was about 6-7 years ago and I had threshhold effects. The second time was 1.5-2 months ago and I had a full on breakthrough with only one medium-large hit of 25x. I have never used opiates other than the occasional Vike after getting a tooth pulled.

Salvia works on kappa opiod receptors as far as i know so possibly some truth to what you say. Cocaine also has some minor effect on these receptors as well and its very possible that different receptor sites are activated or deactivated by the different substances.

I think there are three main factors as to why some people have trouble getting off on salvia:

    a) possibly a small percentage is immune to its effects but if you are feeling something at least I doubt that's you.

    B) getting crappy leaves or extracts. It would not surprise me if there is a fair amount of alkaloid variability with salvia leaves.

    C) technique is flawed. Salvia does take a certain smoking technique that's different from say pot. If you are using extracts the technique is:

    - put a little pot or some herb (damiana, mugwort, etc) at the base of the stem hole so the salvia doesn't just fall through when lit.

-keep the lighter on the material constantly when smoking, don't light it and then let go like pot.

-take large rips and hold it in for 10 seconds. 2 hits is all you need, 3 max!!! And many can get off on 1.

Once you breakthrough it seems you can relax on the technique for a bit but if you are not breaking through try that. If you still have recollection you have smoked salvia you have not broke through yet. Those unfamiliar with hallucinogens I recommend a sitter and even those who are I suggest lying down.

Salvia has only ever given me a minor high. I enjoy the low level salvia high more than the a strong salvia ego death trip anyways and i find it lasts longer. I thought I had a natural tolerance or something, but this might explain it. i use oxycontin pretty often..

salvia affects the kappa-opiod receptors. opiates affect the mu-opiod receptors. i dont know much about neurochemistry, these are completely different drugs, but with some similarities.
