They were an uncompromising band with a consistent raison de'tre.

They were also VERY experimental and almost avantgarde, at least in the earlier years.

I mean, they were doing shit like this in 1969:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPOqJQV4pmc"]YouTube- The Grateful Dead - Feedback / And We Bid You Goodnight

which doesn't sound that different from what a lot of 'cutting edge' bands are doing today.

This was not at all out of character for them, by the way. The 'space' was an integral part of their live performances.

nah dude, thing is, everyone who matters already knows the velvet underground is the reason we have sonic youth which is the reason why have 90% of anything else. Also can you tell me some TVU songs where they fucking drone/psych/noise out like in the OP?

but I dont think many people know about this side of the dead's music.

Droning noise, psychedelic noise at the end.

You can also check out the song sister ray for yourself but it's 17 minutes long and i'm not going to post it here.

yah well you are giving a live performance of the Dead so it's hard to compare it, The Velvet Underground played at Andy Warhol's Factory i'm sure there were many unstructered freak out music evenings, and Pink Floyd was doing it before the Dead as well.

Maybe they were, but the Velvets were doing it in 1967.

I don't hear anything remarkable or interesting in the video that was posted here, and if you ask me the Dead actually deserve a lot less recognition than they have now. They were a pretty boring, ordinary band really... and the only reason they're even halfway relevant now is because they let their concerts become open drug markets.

You're still missing the point, I'm not saying if it weren't for the grateful dead thered be no noise rock, nor am I saying they were more influential than the velvet underground or Pink Floyd in that regard.

Both bands whose influence is widely acknowledged. I think the majority of people probably see the Grateful Dead the same way as you do. Personally I think they really had the fire during the Pig Pen years.

Then what are you saying, exactly? That for a mediocre band, they weren't half bad?

Influence is relative, for example, Pink Floyd despite being one of the most famous bands ever arguably does not have that much influence. How often do you see Pink Floyd cited as an influence? Fact is most bands don't try to replicate the sound. Noise rock on the other hand, how many bands such as Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine list the Grateful Dead as an influence? Now ask a bunch of jam bands the same question and you'll get a different answer.

Where do you live? Heaps of bands cite Pink Floyd as an influence-- the big ones being Radiohead and The Flaming Lips. I can't believe you would say that Pink Floyd isn't influential... next to The Beatles, they're actually one of the most influential bands out there-- whole genres have been inspired by them!

Maybe Phish was inspired by the Grateful Dead, but I don't think they're a particularly interesting band either-- again, their appeal is mostly based on buying and selling drugs, or for disease fanatics who like easy hippie girls.

The Grateful Dead does nothing new... except manage to sound like a less catchy, less interesting version of about 10 other bands.

No, not really. Sure there's other bands too, Tool, and Mostly Autumn is the closest thing I've found to the next Pink Floyd, but as a whole Pink Floyd's influence isn't so large in the overall music world.
