When I was 15 I was an idiot. I got my tongue pierced and right before breaking out the needle the guy sneezed................needless to say I didn't keep it long. I 'd take it out regardless. :)

First thing: don't use Listerine. It's waaaay too harsh for a fresh piercing. Somehow I'm not surprised that a shop who does $5 piercing specials would recommend it to you. Warm sea salt soaks/gargles 2-3 times a day and rinse with an antibac/antimicrobial non-alcohol (very important!!) mouthwash diluted 50/50 with bottled water after EVERY SINGLE thing you put in your mouth (besides bottled filtered water) is the way to go. Seriously, get a bottle of Evian or whatever, dump out half and fill it the rest of the way with mouthwash. Keep it on your person at all times and give a quick rinse after every time you eat, drink or smoke.

Second: don't remove a fresh piercing if you suspect infection, it will almost definitely abcess. Keep it clean, but otherwise leave it alone and move your tongue as little as possible.

Don't freak out, it is possible you could be having a systemic infection due to unstanitary conditions, but the best thing to do is go to the doc and get a Rx for Cipro or some other general use antibiotic. The doctor will probably tell you to remove the piercing, but doctors don't know shit about piercings, so keep it in at least until it's healed. Abcesses are a very real and common problem when the piercing is allowed to close up before the infection is cleared. I can't stress this enough.

    Good luck.

as Sweet says - warm salt water is the way to go, swill your mouth out a couple times a day.

Ibuprofen/ Nurofen or Paracetamol all have ingredients in them to reduce swelling so take a couple of these every few hours and it'll dull the pain and stop the swelling.

Tongue piercings take about a week before you can eat properly so just try ice cream (the coolness will help too ) and soup or liquidised foods.

If you are really worried go to a Dr and ask for assistance but honestly I think you'll be fine if you just make sure you really REALLY look after it properly.

    Hugs and good luck

yeah i usually take nurifean plus when i get piercings, its the best :) but they can be addictive so, just be careful with them...

The only mistake you made was only limiting yourself to one tongue peircing!! You should have gotten more!!! 4x as many!!!!! And I've had 3 in one hit so don't listen to anyone who says it's too painful.
