I thought I'd start a helpful thread where people can come and read potentially hazardous things not to do along their dread locking journey no matter what method they may use. Things I came up with: Wax Playing with your hair/running your fingers through it Hair Dye Clhorine Bad cleaning habits; i.e. washing once a week after it getting all sweaty and gross for days etc. Along the same lines; conditioner Post any other helpful ideas you have Excessive flaming and/or misguidance will be reported Thanks for helping keep this site clean and beneficial to others!
Wait, I probably know the answer but... you're saying it needs to be washed more than once a week and not only when they're really dirty? This is going to be my downfall. No way I will remember to wash it so often. But I will put up post-it notes around my house.
It appears that you don't realize that there are people with dreads/dreads in progress who have some funky smells coming from their hair. There was a user on here who posted about getting sweaty outside because it was hot and how he hadn't washed his hair in 2 weeks.
not cutting your dreads numerous ammounts of times. Not allowing small birds to groom your head Not brushing your hair
I see no problem with this..... unless you are dunking your head in a bucket of pure chlorine.... I actually find swimming in a chlorine pool helps my hair lock up a little better.
wash your hair as often as you're accustomed to. no rubber bands, or excessive binding. one piece of advice i got (from the late great SoaringEagle) was if you wear it up in a ponytail all day, leave it down for that same amount of time.
Don't listen to what every single solitary person has to say. Everyone's hair is different and if you do EVERYTHING you're told your hair will look like shit and you'll be confused.
I had a similar close call. I was working on my cars carby... open metal fan and belts.... dread came out my beanie and was millimeters away from the fan.
Throw away everything you own that hs velcro on it, don't let your cats play with your newly formed dreads, don't sit in front of a person on the bus with a brush lest they attack your dreads with it, or you feel tempted to buy a brush, most importanly though, stay away from carbohydrates, dreads HATE carbohydrates.
Stay away from them altogether. Don't even have a trace of carbohydrates in your body or within a ten foot radius of your dreads.
In the begginning of the dread process [first year] I would agree with NattyFreds advice. However after they have formed and are tight it's ok to use conditioner. I swim on a bi daily basis and have been washing my hair every other day with shampoo and every 4 days or so with shampoo and conditioner. Also...you can use whatever the hell kind of shampoo you want it doesnt have to be fancy dread stuff. I currently use some generic Suave shit that smells like pomegranites...
Set your hairs on fire while lighting a spliff on the stove top Take any of these threads seriously Stinkpalm... yourself
