Im looking for somone who started their dreads by crocheting to ask a couple of questions.
initial question, did you bother to maintain them after they were put in or just let them do their thing?

I wouldn't so that shit to mine, but I can tell you from the people I know that have they usually give up on maintaining them with the hook eventually, or lose their locks.

Check Youtube for interlockers. Might be what you're looking for.

well, a lot of people that crochet think they need to palm roll or use wax, or root flip.
you won't get a lot of support for any of those things in this forum.

P.S> don't check youtube for interlockers if you have caucasian type hair

You could still interlock on locs that are in the teenage/mature stage on Caucasian hair in theory. Just won't see it on youtube.

Before you started your lock. If he's crocheting and they've started to lock...isn't interlocking essentially what yall call root flipping?

I did crochet to start, and I don't really recommend it. While my dreads turned out great and i'm almost a year and a half in, I wouldn't do it again. Hurts like a bitch and probably breaks a lot of hairs. check out my timeline to see how it went.

I did no maintenance after I initially crocheted it... just let it go and they worked out fine! let me know if you have more questions.

Hey (timidly raises hand) mind if I chirp in? I started my dreads w/ a crochet hook (not interlocking, more like actually crocheted them) and they looked way to fake so I haven't touched them with a hook since. It's been a month of not touching them and some came loose, but the ones that stayed are really loopy and cool lookin. I wouldn't recommend crocheting dreads, but hey, live and learn.

i've known people who have crocheted dreads and they had someone do 'maintenance' every few months or something by crocheting loose hairs and the roots. they tended to go for 'maintenance' just when the dreads started looking good to me.

I didnt know you could actually start locks with a hook? I thought they were for maintenance only. Do you have pictures of your hair? I'm very interested to see what they look like. =]
