which is better??? I personally think that, while cd's are more convenient for likes of carrying around with you when your out and about, they lose alot of the impact of the sound, and the soul found on vynil. what do u guys think??? peace and love xxxxxx
Vynil's really good when you take care of it properly. I think vynil feels cooler to have and to use as well; is that slightly strange? I still think CDs are best, as they're not damaged as easily, but vynil really kicks ass.
Vinyl is "cool" and the packaging is obviously much nicer, but CD's win hands down. They're amazingly versatile: you can play them in your stereo, in your car, on the go, rip the tracks to your computer, put the CD on an MP3 player, send the digital tracks to friends, edit them on your computer, make mixed CD's... the possibilities are endless. Plus, the sound quality of CD's is superior to that of vinyl. I have brand new, high-quality pressings of some records and have the same albums on CD, and the CD albums do sound better. Vinyl is cool, but CD's rule.
I prefer the sound of vinyl..I like the scratchy sound and sharpness, but of course cds are more convenient as has been mentioned. I have gotten rid of so many records just because I was tired of lugging them around every time I moved.
I listen to CD's, but this statement is false. CD's involve data bits, hence there are gaps in capturing the sound continously as it was meant to be heard. There are no gaps in vynil, therefore the representation of sound is more accurate too what you would actually hear being presented live.
there's just something about the crackle that makes vinyl great, even though i'm from the CD generation. i don't own a record player and i really wish i did, but at the same time i wouldn't have nearly as large of a music collection if i had the vinyls...
I think vinyl sounds better, but I like how easy it is to make cds. And record players are expensive as fuck, so I can't listen to any of my records.
Well, technically the sound quality of vinyl may be better, but, from what I know, the human ear can't really tell. Plus, with each spin of a vinyl record, the sound quality decreases as small marks are created on the record which will eventually lead to noise. I always think that most people who say that vinyl sounds better are simply being nostalgic, but I suppose premium grade vinyl on an audiophile-grade turntable does sound pretty good.
It's defiantly nostalgia for me, but i admit, i'm kind of a vinyl snob. i love my records, wouldn't trade 'em for anything.
It takes a really good sound system to really appreciate the difference in sound. If you're listening on a compact system, there is no difference. If you're lucky enough to have access to a really good (megabuck) sound system, it's obvious that vynil sounds better by miles. I've heard some vynil at a friend's house in a system that has a very good turntable and very good speakers. His Record Cleaning Machine costs more than my whole system. In such a system, the difference is so great, its almost unbelievable.
you know what's awesome though... now they have CDs that look like vinyls on one side. they're cool to look at, but they don't work well in portable CD players for some reason.
I've had great LP's and shit LP's sound quality wise and the same for CD, goes without saying. Sound quality issues aside it's also obvious that CD's have had a big impact on how a band compiles a track-list to fill an album, in terms of flow and an album being a complete work rather than just a collection of songs. At one time it was around 40 mins for your average LP. Now alot of artists release albums almost twice that on CD. I'm not so sure this is always a good thing really. I'm hard pressed to find a modern album I own that hasn't been let down a bit by filler. Very often can't be arsed to listen to a full 60-70 mins of one album either.
I used to think CDs were the shit, but they get scratchy too, so I'm very disappointed in them. Someone needs to come up with something more durable. Therefore, vinyl is a winner to me, there's a lot of stuff on vinyl that you cannot get on CDs.
CD's are much easier to take care of. Vinyl records are a bitch, though. You have to keep dust off of them (which seems to be a near impossible task), or scratches will form as the needle passes over the dust. CD's are simple. Just don't touch the bottom and they're absolutely fine. In fact, I don't think that any of my CD's are scratched.
