I sit here, having washed my hair for the fourth time in a week STILL smelling a little like sour milk.

Not as much as I did to start mind, after the mass hysteria and making people pass out within a five mile radius things have begun to improve.

But seriously - my friend advised me that coconut milk and coconut oil is very good for dreads. Having been to two festivals and got covered in face paint, mud and lordy knows what else I felt my dreads deserved pampering.

I went to my local health food shop and bought a tin of coconut milk oil. At home in the shower I wetted my babies up then poured on the contents of the tin, confidently trusting in my good friends advice. :D

It clung to my hair and wouldn't wash out properly, it stunk too!!

Why did it do this? Was my friend totally wrong? Did I just do it wrong? And seriously HOW do I get this smell to go away?!!!

    HELP

I have no idea why your friend would suggest that. It sounds terrible. :( Why would you put milk on your hair? What purpose was it supposed to serve?

Coconut milk can be kind of oily.....and oil doesn't come out really without shampoo or vigorous agitation. So unless your hair is on the dry side...no bueno.

wtf I'd say it'll come out fine, just do a deep cleanse. leave whatever shampoo you use on for 10mins then scrub it out with hot water

maybe she meant like a coconut milk based shampoo and not actually a tin of coconut milk? Either way...it'll come out...just might have to scrub deh fuckz out of your hair for a bit and chalk it up to a lesson learned! =]

Thanks Luxie, it seems most people would rather mock and be completely unhelpful rather than just offer a word of advice so I really appreciate your suggestion. It's pretty much gone now so hopefully if I do this I'll be back to healthy hair once again. Thanks :)

Yeah I have been, no he definately meant a tin of it, said he'd known other dread heads who'd used it and it'd worked fine. They must have had super loose dreads or he's imagining things!!

Thanks to all those who helped.

Seriously. I've had people tell me they've know someone with dreads who used
    honey
    mayonaise
    wax (and the like)
    fucking peanut butter
    etc

and their dreads all 'turned out fine'...... Bleh

"Hey Johnny, you're breath smells really fresh today."
"Oh, it's not my breath, I put half a tube of Crest in my hair this morning to lock my dreads while the grease sets in the dreadlocks."
    "..."
"I know what I'm doing, ALL the coo' people put Crest on their hair."

Well actually, it's a terrible conditioner, but as a leave-in, it's fine. I occasionally take some and spread it into the dry spots.
But it is way too oily to pour all over. So I think your friend probably just saw someone use it like I do, and was confused.

Whoever puts coconut milk in your hair is really mistaken.

It is the coconut oil that is good, not milk or cream. Just plain coconut oil that comes in a plastic or glass jar.
