i had this idea while laying in bed last night. i've noticed around town (not just this town but most every town in california) many fruit trees in peoples yards. a lot of the times all the fruit that is easy to reach has been picked, but the tops of the trees are full of fruit that just stays there until it rots off. here's my idea. what if i was to get one of them fruit pickers on a long stick and offer to pick the fruit for "free". i'd just ask that they take what they think they'd use and give me the rest. then i could trade this fruit with others who have trees full of fruit or give it away to people that want it, such as homeless folks or food banks. this idea might actually work better in the town we may move to.
as long as you don't live in the same town as me... maybe i should start a facebook group with this idea...
When I was little we did something similar, and the family gave us bag loads of fruit to take away. It was a fun time.
I wonder, in general, how many people preserve fruits anymore. They probably also let the tops of the tree just go as they don't wish to eat anymore and do not preserve the fruits. Your idea is a good one, someone would then be eating it.
haha rite after you posted this I went to get cigs, turned off my block and and there was dates all over, almost going across the street that had fallen off a palm. I was thinking how many people they could have fed. Most of them had been run over though...
dates can be made into many things and i guess are really good for you.. we've been driving and bike around the town we're probably moving too and taking mental note of the fruit bearing trees i spot..
thats a really good idea! im lucky enough to have a kind neighbor who lets me pillage his guava trees and mullberry bushes whenever i like.
okay, so i made a facebook group. you can join it if you want! just search for "free the fruit" (not free the fruit animal) i've been looking into how to make this a legitimate non-profit. thats going to take some work on my part.. if this even pans out!
