It really doesnt smell but it depends on what environment your in, if its starting to smell rinse in a salt water solution and when its totally dry rub in some essential oils like rosemary or juniper berry..

I've had dreadies for about 8 months now, I dyed mine in the first month and they were fine - I've dyed them a lot since too! Just keep in mind that the more you dye the more it damages your hair and that it's insanely hard to get the dye into the centre of the dread!!

Definately ditch the elastic bands and any hair ties etc, the best thing to keep them smart at work is just tye them back and use a headband, I do this and it works fine.

I have shaved the sides of my head so it's a few less dreads to contend with, plus it made the hot summer easier.

One other thing - lemon juice is ace for dreads! It has really good cleaning power and helps knot your hair up a treat.

    Enjoy your babies :)

It's called Sebum, more commonly referred to as grease. I would rather not let grease set my hair, thanks:puke:

Dye it whenever you want before dreading, after dreading just rinse rinse rinse and steer clear of the conditioner that comes with it.

If your hair starts to smell don't piss about with silly salt water solutions, wash it. "wash it with febreeze."

This is your first mistake: Washing them every day. They will 1) smell 2) unravel. It's good you are just washing them weekly. Try to go for longer since you swim too. Only wash your hair when its gets greasy, +1 day.

You soak them in a pan? Ok.. If you like but you might find it easier to make a spray of your essential oils and spritz onto your dreads if you want a "scent". That's right, spritz *jazzhands*. Just rinse them in water if you aren't keen on uing the shampoo. Once your dreads get used to not having the shampoo they will sort themselves out and won't need the shampoop.

Your dreads will only get mouldy if you keep them wet for days on end. And even then, thats only in older dreads, but still, try to avoid it. You won't need to wash your dreads after you've been in the sea- the salt is good for young dreads. How many times a week do you longboard? Is that a fancy word for surfing? I'm going to call it surfing. So lets say You surf once or twice a week, you could rinse your dreads in the shower after one of those sessions, then the other session you can write off. Just try and dry them as much as you can after you finish.

I found wraps and beads twice as good as those bloomin elastic bands. Though with wraps the dread can't shrink (because its all tied up) so who knows if it actually helps at all. I used beads to smooth the bumps, but now I like the bumps and kinda wish I had left all of them. Again for the 50kth time on this forum, time is best for getting them tight.

There was a post on here last year about the melting temperatures for wax compared to those of skin etc. Brownie points for anyone who remembers it/can find the post. Basically, the melting temp for wax is higher than that of skin. You ain't getting that wax out.
To keep dreads neat and wax-free, use a headband. A few of us on the site make them, and you can get them everywhere. Your dreads stay out of the way and you can tie them up also which is handy.

You can dye them whenever you like, just make sure the older the dreads them more you rinse. Dreads are like sponges and will suck up all the dye- Oh another point, get two boxes of dye, dreads take more than you think- so you have to make sure you rinse them good and proper.

    Sorted.

I believe he is talking about longboard skateboarding, although longboarding is also a type of surfing (I could be wrong, but it seems like he is worried about his own sweat causing mold not ocean water)

I find skating a longboard to be much less sweat producing than a typical street deck, but I guess skating anything in 100degree weather would do it. I don't think the sweat from my head smells anywhere near as bad as sweat that comes from other places...

i longboard (which is skating more than surfing) every single day, for probably about 3+ hours each day, as long as its not raining intensely. and it tends to be hot out, so i def do sweat, and i can feel my dreads becoming sweaty. not like gross and dripping or anything, but they DEFFF have alot of moisture in them.

    to the op:

in my experience, baking soda/bicarb has softened my dreads - mebbe not good for baby dreads. i dont actually use it much, maybe once every 3-4 months.

i doubt theyll get mouldy from sweat, theyll just stink. so keep em clean :D i have a spray which is tea tree oil in water.. you could use any essential oil to keep em smelling fresh

i didnt use rubber bands, my dreads are pretty awesome if i do say so myself

alsoooooo dont use wax :) wear a bandana or something

    clarifying.

i would consider longboarding surfing, if the surfboard was slightly shorter, and built more like a skateboard. with wheels and trucks and such.

idk, personally i see it closer to skateboarding, however it is pretty much surfing on pavement instead of water

btw. i have taken all my rubberbands out, only have added wax like 3 times since i had them, and that was at the beginning, and since then have soaked them in really hot water and such

also, i clean them only if i find them to be really greasy, which is like once a week at this point.

    thank you all :)

anymore tips, feel free to post!

clarification is unclear... Alls I want to know is whether you understand that the term 'longboarding' can refer equally to the act of surfing a longboard and that of skating a longboard (and who knows... there may be other types of longboarding out there). In order to understand what you were talking about we needed a little more context.

:D In your case, I used my Sherlock-Holmes-like skills of deduction to conclude that you are a skater, and not a surfer (although perhaps you do both, but skate more). However it is easy to see how those without similar powers might be confused.
