lol of course not, that would be stupid, obviously labels could be wrong aswell..example someone with mental health probles wouldnt introduce thereselves as a schizophrenic or you wouldnt say hey john doe! meet my freind here, he's a manic depressive.........all just labels, i try not to label anyone though id be the first to admit that subconciously i do it times, it seems like a way of how things get organised in our heads, as i said earlier everyones individual, labels are too small to describe any one person, i would use labells to describe a collective of people in the loosest of ways, or to describe the traits that a person has but not meaning thats WHAT they are, i think that probably they mean differant things to differant people, i personnally dont really know what they mean to me but i'm at the conclusion that they could be insulting or helpfull therefore i wouldnt label anyone and i dont label myself as anything though i probably get labelled all sorts of things by all differant people, its interesting to get peoples views on this and to see how a thread can grow and mature, thank god for forums eh
It's the way we're wired. It’s how we make sense of things. We separate the world into categories so we can understand it more easily. We’re usually trying to be a part of a group or reject a group or both- which means we’ll allow ourselves to fall into one of the categories people have listed above Its not a good thing or a necessarily a bad thing- -but it sez a lot about the way people want to pre judge others with out really getting to know them
the user named Floes has created an interesting thread about "labells" if any you guys are interested http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=385477&f=12
That response shows me that you are the sheep here son. You either are ill informed, uninformed, or just plain ignorant. I'll go down the list for you with definitions: The Trustafarian: This is the guy with Dreadlocks and a Bob Marley sticker on his Range Rover. He'll usually call you a "Fucking Capitalist" because you wont sell him an eighth for $20 when the going rate is $50. The Militant: This is the guy who talks about "Revolution" all the time and has very little sense of humor. Usually he is vegan and proclaims himself so very loudly and is trying to make the world vegan too. This is kind of like the Hippie equivalent to a Crasshole. The New Ager: These are the hyper-sensitive sometimes flaky types. Like the Militant they sometimes have Vegan tendancies. Unlike the militant they are generally pacifists. They generally are "Spiritual Tourists" practicing different religions for a short time then moving along when things get too difficult. If they do take drugs it is usually pot or psychadellics and they view it as a sacrament. The "Head": These are the ones who's entire life revolves around one particular band i.e. Phish Heads, Spread Heads, Dead Heads, moe.rons etc. Unfortunately you can't have any type of musical discussion with them because if you aren't talking about the one band that they are into then you are a "Fucking Moron who doesn't know anything about good music." The Crustie aka the Wookie: These are the filthy motherfuckers. Usually they are couch surfers. They eat, drink, smoke and take anything they can scrounge. They are kind of like the Gutter Punks of the Hippie Scene. The Drug Casualty: These are the guys who took way too much of something and went on a trip they couldn't come back from. Although I've seen a few too many 14 year old girls on the scene way too strung out on dope too. Usually they are skinny, dirty, and toothless bitching about how the scene was way better 20 years ago. The Parasite: They usually dress the part and talk the talk but there is something missing. They only take but never give anything back. They usually call everybody "Brother" or "Family" and use phrases like "I'm all about Karma" when trying to get something for free. I've been around enough of this that every time sombody calls me brother I allways want to make sure I still have my wallet. Sometimes their travelling companion is the strung out 14 year old from the previous spot on the list. Usually they are pimping out said 14 year old to other parasites in the name of "Free Love." The Back to the Lander: They usually went back to the land (duh). They own Organic Farms, and live the agrarian lifestyle. This only scratches the surface of the different types of hippies there are. I know that there are other types. Making a stupid generalised statement like all Hippies are the same and follow like sheep is an ignorant asanine comment that to me rates right up there with "all Jews are rich, have big noses, and are responsible for everything that is wrong with the world," as some of the stupidest shit that I've ever heard in my life. Your comment is based on your observations that lack any real depth or understanding. Peace Out, Rev J
I never really called myself a Hippie, but do wear the broad stereotype as a ref to where I've been. Maybe "Retired Hippie" might fit some of us who were there living the life in the 60-70s but have opted to slow it down a bit as we age. Altho, I still have a beard, wear cut off denim shorts & flip flops, go nude in public when possible, sleep on a mattress on the floor, ride a bike as my primary transportation and still have a sense of brotherhood with others. However, I no longer live in a crash pad, panhandle in the French Quarter or drop unknown drugs on faith (Especially those my doctor is pushing).
Thanks for the reply reverand. I just realised my post was stupid.. It's just that as I was replying I was thinking of someone I seen (a girl with dreadlocks and multi-coloured clothing) who was saying she's an individual and everyone else follows the croud. But just looking at her I could see she's obviously trying to follow the hippy croud. You have to admit though a lot do follow the croud rather than being an individual. I myself listen to heavy metal, some rap, some trance, but also like jack johnson and others with the same feel. I have a short mohawk and don't dress a way that would say I'm a hippy. Sorry for that post. I shouldn't judge so easily.
Not a big deal. I used to feel the same way about Mansonites (Mairlyn Manson fans). I worked in a record store and I would see these 13 year olds march in (yes they marched, they even walked alike) dressed head to toe in black with thick soled boots and black eye make up (even the guys) and would come to me the record store employee and I would allways know before they asked where the Marilyn Manson CD's were and again they would use the same bullshit line about individualism. Long story short I know where you are coming from. It seems that every subculture has there uniform. I was a hardcore metalhead actually I still love alot of the stuff I used to listen to as a musician I still practice a little thrash to keep my technique together. I love the Sex Pistols too. But I also dig Miles Davis, Sublime, Fela Kuti, The Aquarium Rescue Unit, Ministry, Jack Johnson, John Coltrane, Willie Nelson, The Greatful Dead, Korn etc. I have a Goatee and a Greying pontail. Sometimes I wear tie dye but lately I've been wearing Tribal Gear alot. I got a suggestion from someone reading that last post that I write a book. I'm actually thinking about it. It will probably be kind of a "Hippie Noir" detective story I have a begining in my head. I just need time to write it out. Peace Out, Rev J
Wow, this really has me thinking as to where I fit in. I think the whole "hippy" thing has gotten to commercialized, as you basically said Reverend. There are way to many people thinking that dressing like a hippy makes you one (I use the term hippy losely obviously). Personally, I make most of my clothing so sometimes it fits a certain style, but for the most part it's all original. I think there is way to much pressure to "fit in" somewhere. I've noticed more and more since the years pass that I graduated high school, that people still act like they're in high school! They criticize and try to be the coolest one around...sorry, a little off topic...but everyone has to find their own path in life. I've tried hiding my real self just to fit in and found myself unhappy. My son has truly shown me the path to being an individual. He doesn't care what I look like, what my hobbies are and so on, as long as I'm loving him. I think that most people just need to grow up, and that takes time exploring other paths in life. Sorry for the rant, but this thread is really interesting and has my mind going a hundred miles an hour!
Yeah that's the thing. I call myself a Hippie because I agree with the values and got tired of trying to explain to people what "Bohemian" means. Alot of what I was describing in that post was based on what I've observed in the lot, on the street and in various social gatherings. I wear what I like because I like it not because it is fashionable. Yes I name dropped a brand name because the brand is making clothes I like. For example this is my new favorite t-shirt: But I am a 35 year old hippie and after about 20 years of trying to force myself to fit into different segments of different subcultures this is where I feel most comfortable. Peace Out, Rev J
I am one of the back to the landers I guess .I live on a farm and grow a huge garden and preserve all my own food .We raise and work up all our meat too.(sorry vegans) I have always considered myself a hippie .I grew up during the sixties and I have always related to that era .My whole mindset comes from that time .I try to do good for others and be a loving ,caring human being .I think that all that really matters at the end of the day is were you a good person ,did you do all you could to help change the world ,did you show love to your family and friends .It really doesn't matter what you are stereotyped as .Either you are a good person or not .That's just my 2 cents Peace Melissa
If your 45- you were 4 yrs old in 69- I love the fact that you have all the values, but you really didnt do a lot of growing up in the 60,s- - maybe your parents did and passed it on- -' - no offense, Im just saying... with respect jjack
I've been thinking about this list for a while. Sheep. Sheep. Sheep. Mixed Sheep. Rats. ..sounds pretty human Sheep. Respectable. You have to admit, a lot of these people are sheep. Even though there are people that naturally find themselves in these or similar categories; there are a lot of people that fit these examples way too closely. Most people are followers. Most others, are astray. Very few lead themselves well these days, and very few lead others well; those that do, often lead us into oblivion. May sound cynical, but only if you're letting it get to you =P
It is true what you say I didn't do all my growing up in the sixties but I do remember more about that time than you would think .I remember when Robert Kennedy was shot ,the war protests ,watching the moon landing ,Woodstock etc..More than that tho I remember the people and their spirit and the excitement (there's something happening here ) in the sixties and it was carried on in my everyday life and continued into the seventies .I have tried to live my life by the values and the wisdom that was passed on to me by those people .So yes it was passed on .I am still a child of the sixties in my mind .I hope you don't mind if I claim that and I truly mean no disrespect to you .I was not a mover and shaker and a doer during that time but, I was a student .God bless Melissa
You're right they are sheep in their own ways but they generally aren't the same type of sheep. It's like different breeds of sheep. The back to the lander will tell you that. As for me I grew up on a farm. My dad runs a school for sustainable living. Again I know that there are other types of hippies that I didn't list like "Straight Edge" hippies i.e. hippies that don't take drugs who I find are easier to deal with than straight edge punks. Striaght edge hippies don't generally try to force their straight edgeness down your throat whereas straight edge punks will punch you in the face if you ask them for a light. The point that I was trying to make is that there are different types of hippies with different customs and ettiquette. You can be a hippie and fit into any of these paradigms or none of them. My fiancee calls me a 'Punk Hippie' because even though I'm about 98% pacifist (I honestly don't believe that anyone is 100% pacifist), help others professionally, smoke a little herb, and wear tie dye upon occasion I also have an edge to me, and I'm cynical as a beast. I'm a Hippie because I love the Philosophies, the Music, and the Lifestyle. I don't like the arguements about who is a real hippie and who isn't. I don't like the status symbols that have popped up around it and some of the exclusionary attitudes that some on the scene have. I listen to my elders and learn from their mistakes. I observe others and realise that this subculture has as much cliqueishness as any other. And Duck I've taken your advice and started writing a book. I'm about 2 pages into it and am kind of letting it dictate itself to me. Right now it is kind of working itself up as a mixture of Noir, Philosophy, and a little satire. I've read a little of what I have written to my fiancee and she has laughed out loud at what I've written. Peace Out, Rev J
We are all sheep, just different flocks. If your a people, your a sheeple. Until the day that a subculture is made up of something other than humans, you will always have the whole spectrum of humanity and personalities played out regardless of the label you would choose to apply to the group.
