On 24 July 2010, a crowd crush at the 2010 Love Parade electronic music festival in Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, caused the death of 21 people. At least another 510 people were injured.

The Love Parade was a popular and free access electronic dance music festival and parade that originated in 1989 in Berlin. The parade features stages, but is well known for its floats with music, DJs and dancers moving through the audience. This was the first edition of the festival that was organised in a closed-off festival area.[citation needed] Between 200,000 and 1.4 million people were reported to be attending the event and 3,200 police were on hand.

The event was one of the program elements of RUHR.2010, whereby cultural events in the Ruhr area are highlighted, because the Ruhr is 2010's European Capital of Culture.

The festival was staged on the area of an old industrial railway station. The capacity of the enclosed location was limited to 250,000 people at most,[4] but more than one million visitors were expected, based on the experience of previous years. Reader comments on Der Westen, a local news portal, had warned of impending disaster in the days before the event.

Entrance was granted at 14:00 CEST (12:00 UTC). The 200 to 300 metre-long tunnel was the only entrance and exit point of the festival area.

Because of overcrowding, police at the entrance began announcing over loudspeakers that new arrivals should turn around and head back. The side of the tunnel that was the entry of the parade area was closed, but people continued to enter the tunnel from the rear, despite being told it was closed. A stampede occurred as the ramp between the tunnel and festival area became overcrowded.

There was some debate as to how the fatalities occurred. Some reports suggested the deaths were caused by people falling off a staircase as they tried to escape the tunnel. However, autopsies showed that all of the fatalities were due to crushed rib cages

I'm from Germany and I have actually lived in Duisburg for a long time before I got my green card and moved to the United States. I have still family there and they told me about the disaster. My aunt told me that the city's atmosphere has totally changed since then, especially because of the mayor's irresponsible reaction. To me it feels slightly odd to think about all this for Duisburg is kind of my home town
