I blew my whole garden this year. I got sent to camp for a couple of weeks suddenly, forgot to get somebody to cover watering/covering, and when I got back it was a bad bad scene. I'm hoping for better luck (organizational ability?) next year. My potatoes survived, however.
Ah man that's a shame .We have had a killer garden this year .We have canned about 300 quarts of whole tomatoes and juice ,I have put up bushels of leather britches beans ,canned 60 pints of grape jelly ,froze 150 ears of corn , and we are getting ready to put a cold crop garden out . I hope i don't sound like I'm rubbing it in ,I am just real happy we have had such a great year and have been able to preserve so much .Better luck to you in the next year ! Melissa
Aww, that is not so great. I did all right with my garden this year and watering was good. Even managed to control those potato bugs. I have to confess that I killed some hanging baskets of flowers though. I did not water them enough and they became dried flowers.
I'm making up for it by swapping out a spring, a sockeye, and 10 pounds of ground moose for canned and fresh vegetables.
Timers and drip would have been a workable solution even if you had to be gone for a while. Use the rest of the year to read up about it. It's easy and actually really energy conservative and enviornmentally sound. Not really that expensive and easy to modify for the next year or season.
Thanks. I will take a look into that - my foolproof plan (relying on my girlfriend) didn't work out all that well.
Happy ending. We scrounged potatoes, some cukes and zukes, and the pumpkins seem to be doing alright.
