Okay, I need some advice. I'm thinking of growing some poppies, and I would like to know how do you extract the opium from the plant?

I boiled up whole plants before into a tea- pods, stems, leaves, roots and all. Needed to drink two cups and I would describe the effects a quite moderate. Definitely got me nicely stoned.

boiling destroys the morphine, and to answer your question, you wait 3weeks after the flower petals fall off, then you make 1mm horizontal slices along the pod with a razor blade, then wait for a few hours and scrape off the opium resin from the pod and let it dry for a few days, you can repeat this every week but each time you get less quan/qual, also growing poppies for this reason=production of a Schedule II drug= at least 10-15years on small scale

Red roses from Walmart, let us know how that goes for ya.
acga5 You sure it's 3 weeks after the petals fall off? I was thinkin 3 days. I have also read reports where you tear the pedals off when the flower is in bloom, and then you harvest. If I remember correctly its when the thorns on the crown point upward, or a dark ring appears below the crown, I can't remember.
Ofcourse learning the proper harvesting for optimum yield will take a while to get down. It took opium growing families overseas years maybe even generations to get the opium harvesting just right. Google it and you will find endless info.
