BBC article Oops out of fuel, need to ask round the neighbours for some extra. Is this something that will catch on? (I mean the fuel system, not asking your neighbours for excrement.) Or is it another one of those technologies that is either impractical or very expensive to install.
Well, i'd like to say yes. I think you'll the day our finite supply of oil runs dry, next to anything will seem like a good idea. I think people should be asking themselves what is more 'expensive' a world rid of it's natural fossil fuels, or paying to instal a system that could save them. And anyways, the people who invented this technology are trying to be eco-friendly, there by apposing traditional, economic wealth and greed for sustainability- the last thing they would be wanting to do is ask for obscene amounts of money for the installation of their product. POWER TO THE POO!
I actually think this is a rather good idea. Especially as once I read into it further, it seems the car will run on any compostable material. Well, technically it will run on the methane created when compostable material starts to decompose. So it isn't just raw sewage that would power this "poo-powered car." After learning a bit more about it, this article really dumbs down the idea behind the car if you ask me. When I read it, I must admit, I chuckled at the idea. There was a sense that maybe it was a good way to dispose of sewage; but at the end of the day, it seems that it could really help reuse many things. I mean surely more people would be interested in composting even if that compost bin could help fuel their car. The only downside to things like this, is that the government probably won't help to invest in this, which would bring down the cost of converting older cars to such a system and getting the whole process off the ground quicker.
In principle, yes...but the UK needs to decide on which forms of sustainable transport it uses rather than going with whatever is fashionable. Also there're the risks of travelling around with methane in your car...which is a little reactive, but it doesn't leak as much as hydrogen (due to larger particle size). Usually the gas produced from compostable/organic matter (such as that from anaerobic digestion) is run through a gas turbine to produce electricity. The electricity could run transport...though probably not on the private/scale we're running it on now. I know, I'm a geek. Out of interest...any bristolians out there? oh dear, i can feel another shit joke brewin'.... Ummm what are we gonna do if the shit hits the fan (belt).... but seriously... it's a good idea... there are so many things one could use as fuel... but first we need to take the profit element out, surely?.... nothing is sustainable on its own.... i could be wrong about that... but it does seem rather as if we are thinking about it the wrong way.... mass production is a bad idea... having said that, we would be more in control of the availability of shit, so we could control the market rather like the oil companys do at present... aaaanyway... just wafflin' on... there is always potential in shit...
