Parents fear school Wi-Fi makes kids sick

    16/08/2010 2:57:52 PM

    CTV.ca News
A group of parents in the Barrie area is blaming school wireless Internet networks for a slew of symptoms reportedly plaguing young children.

Parents on the Simcoe County Safe School committee says students in 14 area schools are experiencing problems such as headaches, insomnia and rashes due to microwaves emitted by the Wi-Fi systems.

They say the symptoms seem to subside on weekends and vacations, only to return when the kids go back to school.

Rodney Palmer, the group's spokesperson, says there's no research to show this much exposure to Wi-Fi is safe for children.

He plans to transfer his two children to different schools or even teach them at home this fall is the school doesn't turn off the Wi-Fi.

    Information missing from the article:

    How many kids?
    Do these kids like school?

Maybe they need tin foil hats...there are wi-fi connections everywhere, not just in schools.

There are far more insidious and malicious sources in schools than mere wifi transmitters.
The signal power of those is frankly peanuts anyway, less than 30mW typically.

I don't see anyone moaning about these same kids regularly holding 2W transmitters next to their head to waffle to each other either.

    Are people really this stupid?
Kids feel ill on weekdays because they don't like going to school. All of the symptoms could just be anxiety.

This is the exact reason we should all support one room school houses again! Some might argue about the carcinogens from the fires needed for heat but compared to all the other hazards we are subjecting youth to, it is minor.

Well, there is also the possibility that the kids are getting sick at the school from something else, the symptoms sound like the could be caused by a variety of different things.

Wireless internet uses a form of radio waves of a certain spectrum to communicate. The wavelength is FAR too wide to enter the human body and cause any sort of physiological response.

Any parent who believes this should be forced to go to a science class with their child someday so they can see a picture of the electromagnetic spectrum.

    Especially the like school one....

There do seem to be some very few people who have physical problems with wireless. But that sounds more like some sort of chemical or other radiation problem in the school, or possibly in the community or home that could have caused the wifi sensativity as a perminant disorder.

Betcha they all take photography, painting, or automotive classes, or smoke pot in janitors closets, or something like that...

Why not be more creative and claim that WiFi is the cause of AIDS, not HIV. Also, blame the kids' ailments on HAARP.

It's plainly obvious to me that the children are obsolete and need an upgrade.

Are you sure about that? Wifi (well, b/g/n at least) is in the 2.4GHz band (ie. λ~=12.5cm) and so will penetrate a human body quite easily.
