I spent the entire day in bed watching dvd's with my son. He clings to me something shocking when ill, so it was either me in bed with him, or having the poor sick kid following me around. So bed it was.

I've just been playing piano. I have been playing the same piece over and over, and I still trip up on a small part.

I've always admired people who can play the piano. It's an incredible discipline. People who can play it often make great guitarests.

Guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn but one of the hardest to master. You have to literally sit and play like one scale a day for hours in different positions until you no longer have to think about it, but it just comes natural. My brother spent most of his high-school years (a good 3-4 years) playing every night. He'd come home from school, eat, then go to his room around 5:00 and play untill 11:00 or 12, every day! It payed off, but shit that's a lot of time.

I've been playing for years now, so much the discipline is over with :D My school was quite keen on people learning instruments, so I had lessons for two.

I love people who can play guitar. My brother can, but I've never really had the motivation to learn. I want to though, my brother taught me a little, but I'm terrible!

That's what I did. I still to this day sometimes forget my way with the scales, but usually in keys I don't regularly use. You get so complacent playing in E or C or something, you get start using the dots as markers and I find myself slipping into another key by accident when playing a song (by moving the scale down by say one fret).

How good are you? I can play guitar well, and I can play Piano well too. My piano is only limited by what I can literally play, not how to play it. The theory is the same between the two instruments, so I am fine with that.

Going to post some music up on this site soon, hopefully.

Well, this question has two sides. On the one hand; I`ve been playing guitar (and a bit of bass) for 11 years, but youd probably not believe me if you heard me :D On the other hand I`ve always written lyrics and my own songs, which I think are quite good and I`ve had people at shows tell me they are quite good. Many people have asked me if I have any recordings for purchase but unfortunatly I don`t yet. See, I know what I`m doing when it comes to writing songs, I know what sounds good with what, I know what technically goes well together, I write good dynamics and layers that compliment each other, however I can`t play any really impressive solos or anything. Mostly riffs and songs as a whole.

I suppose I`m more of a song writer who uses the guitar to get my feelings across and to write songs with, rather than a guitarest who writes songs around (or songs that feature) his instrument. I`d probably make a great producer for people who are great at their instruments. I can get around alright, but as you said, I tend to get stuck in usually C, E, and G because I know those areas on the fretboard the best and I`m most comfortable playing in those keys. Getting comfortable however can sometimes get you stuck in a rut you know. Though one usually wants to play in a few keys that best suit their voice. My voice is a baritone so I usually tune down.

See, between us we were make a rock and roll star :p

I've been playing around a decade as well, but my lyrics are hopeless and though my melodies are fine, without a connection through word it runs flat. Musically it great though, I mean I tend to tweak a lot of my music with pitch axis and whatever else, and as you said

I like to feature all songs around limitless possibilities on the instrument at hand. I can solo, it's actually really easy (only seven scales), but I don't like to include it in my music because I don't feel it proves much of a persons ability. A true maestro doesn't need to use such smoke and mirror techniques.

I refuse point blank to right in the Key of C. I am way to much of a snob to do that anymore. And anyways, songs in the Key of C usually sound cheesy, the range of melody always sounds a little crap to me.

    I'll post something soon.

Heh. You've reminded me, I have a tape of a song I wrote in high-school. I may post it.

Anyways, at the risk of sounding like a musical cliche, I don't like to use those sorts of things (tweaker programs). I usually just mic everything and record it that way. Sometimes if I want to put emphasis on my guitar I'll plug it straight into the board so it sounds a little cleaner, less distant. There's usually something a little out of tune in my tracks, but I really appreciate that when I hear it in Bob Dylan's music or elsewhere so I leave it. I find guitar melodies the hardest to write, like an intro riff or what not. Vocal melody isn't as hard.

I hate writing guitar lines. I am actually one of a few people I know of who will write a song from the drum kit first. If you knock down an interesting beat first, guitar lines, particularly bass lines- lend themselves to it.

I like writing pop music anyways, which is very drum orientated and musically quite simple- though I know how to play jazz stupidly.

We should probably discuss this in a more appropriate forum. I created a thread here:

I responded to your last comment in there as well.
