You might not after seeing this! (25 Mins) Im not surprised by anything i saw on that vid!! More Vids: http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace
Ive met.. one that is REALLY good.. he actually repaired the work a geek squad guy did. The only time I brought my computer to geek squad, I had a virus, and when I get my laptop back, theres only half of my total memory, and some functions of my CDROM drive stopped working.. and he charged 200$.. good video though Im surprised I watch the whole thing, and im hungry for more.. thanks for the "more vids" link
Your quite welcome This just shows how mean people are, they just want $$$$ (Most of them (They dont have the customers best interest @ hand))
I fix my own. And I would trust a lay person (that knows what they're doing) to fix it better and cheaper than any company. That being said, if you have some sort've warranty: go for it. But I really recommend trying to find someone in your circle of friends or local classified: because I've only heard bad things about the pros (especially Geek Squad).
I just buy a new one.. LOL.. my gf on the other hand would have a computer in the shop 100 times a year.. Shes not very secure about her data i suppose..
i am a computer repair person and no, i don't trust them [i mostly just help out people i know, gratis] geek squad has gotten a reputation for pulling personal pictures from computers they're working on [is this what the vid shows?] and another for being incompetent [industry standard]
Generalisations are tricky things. Like any task, there will be people who do it well and people who do it badly. I generally do all my computer maintenance myself so can't say as to how much of each there are ^^
Here is a true story, quite a few years ago my freind who was around 15 at the time was waiting at his house for the computer guy to show up and fix his machine, eventualy the man shows up and immediatly my freind senses something is amiss... The entire time the guy is there he just rambles on about how much room my buddy had under his computer desk and how easily it would be to have a girl sit under the desk and blow him, my friend just kinda did the nervous laugh thing and agreed but the guy continued talking about it, eventually he finishes whatever needed to be repaired, grabs his tools and walks out the door to my pals relief, however at the last minute the Tech guy turns around and asks him if he wants a blowjob! My buddy just said "No man, I'm allright" and closed the door.
Just watched that video. I have been tinkering with computers for over 15 years, and I am always dismayed at the high level of incompetence in the industry. That memory error should be able to be diagnosed within about 5 minutes. Did they never hear of BIOS error codes, the beeps when your system boots up. The one beep usually heard is saying "all's well". They tell if there is a basic hardware failure. Even if there is no memory or cpu installed, you still get the error code beeps and each BIOS has specific "codes" that tell what component has failed. Any tech worth a crap should have a list of the codes for the most common BIOS. I have repaired well over a dozen computers after they were "fixed" by some "pro", most of them were fixed at Best Buy. Learning this stuff is pretty simple, at least to get a working understanding of what is going on, and how/what the different hardware components do. It is exactly that type of crap is why I don't do repair anymore as a moneymaking venture. I just can't rip people off like that and it has cost me a job because I refused to charge someone. One thing you hear often is "reformat". Reformatting your hard drive is a last resort solution, and then really only in the case of some rather persistant root-kit or boot sector type of virii infections. (I did have to low-level format a drive once to remove a virus, but only once in over 15 years) Anytime I hear that, I just laugh at the person suggesting it. Reformatting will NEVER fix a hardware issue. My God I've been rambling on again, haven't I.
Yes well its all about $$$,they know whats wrong but they want MORE MONEY which is why you cant trust 99% of them!
I remember that show even without checking the link this is my first computer..Ive only had memory problems (bad stick) and I broke the hinges twice...Ive so far been able to fix it myself but if something major happens Ill just go out and buy a new one I use eset nod32 antivirus, malwarebytes anti malware and spybot removal tool and have not had serious problems yet
That is exactly why I personally feel people should have at least a working knowledge of how/what a computer and it's hardware does. So they have a better idea on whether or not they are getting ripped off. I actually was asked to leave a Best Buy once because I interrupted a sales person when they were feeding a prospective customer a load of crap. The customer ended up listening to me and going with my less expensive and more straightforward solution to their problem. I said to the manager, "You would think you would at least offer me a job, I obviously know more than your sales people." He was not amused.
