I've used the directions here and on several other sites to inoculate some rice cakes. They seem to be coming along nicely. i have them in a plastic container with very moist perlite on the bottom for about 10 days now at what seems to be a nice temperature. What is spreading from around the injection points is a white substance. It's uniform and seems to be OK in all eight jars i inoculated. In one or two of the jars, right at the center of the white areas, which are covering most of the sides at this point, there are some small areas of a darker growth, maybe 1/8 inch (3mm) or so in diameter, probably at just the point where the needle went in. Is this normal or is it infection? since it is the point where the inoculation originally took place I am assuming ( or at least hoping) that this is just a slightly more mature version of the fungus. I'll let them grow a bit and report further in any case. Any help or advice gratefully received!
