Montel Williams looks at Oakland's pot business
    August 23, 2010 - sfgate.com

Longtime TV talk show host and actor Montel Williams has been making the rounds in Oakland with an eye toward getting in on the city's burgeoning marijuana-growing business.

Williams, who has multiple sclerosis, has long touted the medicinal benefits of cannabis. Last week, he met for about 40 minutes at City Hall with City Attorney John Russo, quizzing him on "what is allowable and what is not allowable."

Williams has also been meeting with Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Rebecca Kaplan, talking up the idea of growing specific kinds of pot for specific illnesses.

Just last month, the City Council agreed to grant permits to four large marijuana farms - though the permits won't be issued until January, after the results of a Nov. 2 statewide ballot measure to legalize pot are known.

Kaplan says having someone as recognizable as Williams to help stimulate job growth would be "a great thing."

Hey, maybe he'll do a show on it.

Montel Williams Impressed with Medical Marijuana Liberalism in Israel
    October 30, 2011 - ibtimes.com

Television and radio host Montel Williams told the Associated Press Sunday that he admires Israel's liberal attitude toward medical marijuana and believes all of the U.S. should legalize it.

Williams, an avid advocate of medical marijuana, uses it to relieve pain caused by multiple sclerosis, which was diagnosed with in 1999. Back in 2004, TV Guide Online interviewed Williams after he was detained at Detroit Metro Airport, where baggage screeners found a glass pipe and residue of a marijuana by-product in his bags. That's when Williams's use of marijuana for medicinal purposes became more widespread.

"I think it's time for a change," said Williams. "I hope to inspire others to take a stand. You cannot tell me that if one of George Bush's daughters came to him and said, 'This is the only thing that will help my pain," he'd say, "No, baby, you have to suffer. I'll lay you down on a bed and hook you up to a morphine drip, and when you wake up in four or five days, we'll talk.'"

In the aforementioned TV Guide Online interview, Williams also said that medicinal marijuana eases depression and nerve pain and helps with sleeping disorders. Now, after learning about Israel's cannabis practices, the former host of the "The Montel Williams Show" firmly believes that legal drugs like morphine and Oxycoton can be harmful and addictive. Williams also said that while marijuana use is strictly regulated in Israel, doctors also believe it is less harmful to those who qualify for prescriptions.

As of today, only sixteen states (such as California and New Jersey) and Washington, D.C., have legalized the use of medical marijuana to some extent.

"For me, there is nothing else that can do what it does," 55-year-old Williams said, as he is a daily user of marijuana. "It helps me suppress my pain. When I am not using cannabis, I am thinking about my pain every 45 seconds."

Williams, like some other supporters, said that he hoped marijuana would one day become a regular prescription drug.

"There are chemicals within that plant," he said, referring to Israel. "and some of the leading science on where and how those chemicals work is being done right here in this country."

"Marijuana is just like any other plant-based medicine on this planet," Williams, who is battling Multiple Sclerosis, said. The former talk show host called on the government and pharmaceutical companies to invest in research so that patients like him could have a "quality medication" that isn't tainted by chemicals.
"I want a pharmaceutical company to step up to the plate and do what's right," he said.

He has no idea how to run a shop. No one wants to buy what they can not see and touch, that applies in all retail. Do what they do out here, bud is on display but you look with tongs, so every scrub has not touched what you smoke.

I think the way his shop is operated is a good thing, based on the video. It actually looks and feels like an official medical building/pharmacy, which, in the eyes of many people, will add to the sense of the legitimacy of medical marijuana.

Most of the dispensaries I've seen(I've never actually been to one. Only seen videos) just look like glorified headshops where hapless stoner congregate. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but the way Montel is doing it might make it seem more legit, in the eyes of the naysayers.

Yeah allot of them are glorified head shops. Allot of people who want meds don't like to buy it from a store where Shpongle is playing in the lobby (the norm at my local place). But I have been to a place like Monetell's and it is the only shop that has shorted me.

It was run by shady people though. I am sure you could do things like that and be honest. I guess people who just want meds and are not stoners will not care as much about the strains and what they buy. And who would not want to get their weed from Montell? haha
