i find that the elderly will find any and everything to complain about it. don't bring the matter up again and she'll get over it eventually.
I think you're lucky to still have her with you and be so close to her. I wish my nan was still here but if she asked me to cut my dreads I think I'd do what moving_cloud said and just not mention it. When she was younger people used to take alot of time in their appearance and dreadlocks (even though the same pride is there) just doesn't fit that bill. But Why not tie them up when you're around her and make more of an effort it might make it easier for her to accept them.
tell her the hairdresser said that you are unable to comb them out and dont wanna cut your hair or something otherwise man up and be honest with her and tell her you dont wanna get rid of them
