really trips me out when i start to think about it.

just thinking about what is actually is... its crazy! its like a book with infinite wisdom and knowledge (balanced out with adequate amounts of BS and garbage, of course) that is ever expanding at an incredible rate. when i think about it, if i ever need ANY piece of information regardless of topic, subject, importance, etc.. all i have to do is go online and look it up... and as long the topic i am looking up is not REALLY REALLY obscure or unheard of, i am almost guaranteed to find the info i am searching for.

the internet has become so standard in our society but its really mind boggling how crazy this thing really is. i believe when historians look back at the world 100 years from now, they will speak about the history of humanity in terms of "pre-internet" and "post-internet".. thats how much the internet has changed human life on this planet.

maybe im just stoned and rambling on again, but what do you guys think?

do you think the internet is a "good" thing? as in, do you believe it has helped people/society more so than it has done it harm? or do you believe the internet overall has a negative effect on people/society? for instance isolating people, and making actual human-to-human interaction an "optional" thing... in that sense the internets effect on us becomes quite paradoxical. earlier i was thinking about an old Hopi prophecy which said " The web that connects us will strangle us". I believe that is more relevant today than ever before.

i can see both sides of the argument, and i do have to give it credit where credit is due.. as much of the knowlegde i have gained over the past 9 years or so has been due in large part to internet access. id say within the past 5 years or 6 years nearly all of the subjects that interest me i have researched online and learned a significant amount about. in fact, one of my favorite things to do when im bored is to just look stuff up (usually wikipedia a lot) and read about it... when im doing that something else will come up that catches my eye, then i look that up.. and it just goes on and on, but the point being that i learn a lot of information i would have NEVER come across otherwise. but i can also say that i have seen the harm the internet has caused, and i can sort of see the isolated future the internet is leading us to... one where face-to-face communication and human interaction are considered "useless" in many aspects of life and society.

just thought id put this out there. i've been thinking about it really deeply for a few hours, and its just fascinating to me.

what do you guys think about the internet?

edit: also, its strange to think that my generation will be the last that will ever know a world without internet. i was born in 1989 so i didnt really even know anything about the internet (other than it had something to do with a computer) until i was 11 or 12. its kind of sad to think that from now on, each and every single child will grow up in a world where the internet is of vital importance.

It is a pretty cool thats for damn sure, i agree with ya. The internet is a good thing. It has taught me a great deal about the world that I don't think id be able to get else where. I've met hundreds of people some that i've known for years through games. Just the idea of posting, knowing that someone a long ways away sees my post up after it went to the computer that allows this site to run, then back to both of our compts in a split of a second over and over is just crazy!!

    The internet is just awesome.

Several technology trips me out though. The phone comes to mind. The idea that someone can hear me talk to them through a wire the size of a tooth pick, or not even a wire on the other side of the world... wtf?

I think it's crazy how short of a time period it has been around.

Just imagine 20 more years from now and how advanced it could become.
We'll be laughing at our current browsing experience.

Im not stoked about where the internet is going. Its the last free place on earth where we can talk about sex, drugs, and violence without any or little censorship from the man. Some communist countries have been strictly regulating their internet for years now. Which is where its all heading. Eventually a site like this will be considered "premium content" by some overloaded corporation that has too much money to begin with.

I think the internet itself should stay the same format that it is until some more entertaining coding language comes along to replace HTML, like HTML2 (think this is already out and about).

When Im 60 or 70 I expect EVERYTHING to be 3D and have chairs that simulate whats going on in the movie. Ill be on LSD, 2C-E, mushrooms, or whatever crazy psychedelic they have then all the time

It is a repository of information, a collection from life.
Knowledge is the life you share and wisdom is what you do with information.

good thing/bad thing doesn't really bother me, i think the implications are more interesting... being able to take the internet wherever you go - being able to answer any question or solve any problem... this is the beginning of a cyborg generation

    To the OP

Very interesting thought, the internet is so much apart of our lives now that we might actually have to refer to it in 'pre' and 'post' tense. Though the internet is still in its teens to early twenties so i suspect just like television and the telephone at that age (even tho the internet is a mix of the two) it still has a bit of evolving to do.

We'd be fine if the internet never existed, but if it ceased existing after we have become so accustomed to having it in our lives, we would be lost. No doubt.

Also, my world would fall apart without youtube.
