I'm 32 and settled in northern New England. I live in a large but sparsely populated town so there isn't much to do around here other than hitting one of the two bars (the only businesses here outside of a convenience store) for beer and some hot wings. (not really high on my list of priority's) I generally don't go out except for grocery shopping at the nearest supermarket (a couple towns over) becouse of the distance i try to limit that to once or twice a month. I may sound antisocial but its not really the case, I just have a hard time fitting in around here. I have traveled a little bit and developed some pretty unique/diverse perspectives that just don't seem to fit well in the mainstream social conventions (either liberal or conservative). I would consider myself something of a minimalist, sustainability and "efficiency is key" (I would love to live completely off the grid someday). Other than that I believe in preparedness "adapt and overcome" (procuring resources just in case they become less available when most needed). I have always liked the concept of communal living and think we may all return to those small locally sustained society's again some day (weather through idealism or unfortunate circumstances). I hope to make some new acquaintances there to socialize and/or exchange ideas, maybe share some resources or ideals on how to obtain them. Thanks for taking the time to get to know a little about me, I look forward to hearing from you.
thanks guys.. I like electricity too, but it can be obtained from more sustainable resources. (water, wind, and sun) and can be used more conservatively even then. If yo u can make more than you use, the surplus can be shared (or sold) reducing the demand for power made from burning fossil fuels. I have this terrible feeling that we are going to continue to plunder our non-sustainable resources to the point that there will be a major collapse of the environment, economy and maybe society one day. We really need to take steps to ensure that we can push off that situation as long as possible and make the an effort to head it off all together if at all possible.
Northern New England? Awesome...in summer! I've lived in both Wells, ME and Old Orchard Beach, ME in the past. I usually get to Brattleboro, VT a couple of times a year. Enjoy the forums!
I am familiar with both Wells and Old Orchard, (most the the big towns up rt1 because I hate paying toles when i travel) I am a bit further inland though, so I don't get that nice sea breeze during the summer but I don't have to worry about tidal floods then the tropical storms make it up this way either (or those bone chilling winter gales). I don't mind the winters either, other than the power outages but mostly because I don't have a wood stove. The only state I think I have enjoyed more was Alaska (perhaps I'm just drawn to the north or the cold) Vermont is one place I haven't spent much time (than passing) I'm sure its beautiful.. Thanks for the greeting, hope you're having a good day.
Wells was 1974-77 and Old Orchard Beach was 1985-87. As for tolls? Maybe on the Maine Turnpike in York and at most exits but not here in Connecticut. We haven't had any here since 1989. About the only time I'm even in Maine these days is with Concord Coach, and only to Portland. I should also mention that my maternal grandmother was born and raised in Biddeford. Me personally? I hate the snow and cold. Thankfully, the last three days here felt more like the middle of summer. Yay! Vermont? When I am there, I only get to Brattleboro's exit 3 from I-91. I'm only 11 miles north of Massachusetts and a mere 1/3 mile from the Connecticut River and New Hampshire. Walking over the Connecticut River bridge, you forget that Springfield, MA and Hartford are on that same river. Lastly, I hate the Red Sox and Patriots with a passion. I love the city, but not any of the sports scene. Since the Yankees are terrible right now, I will at least be proud that the Dolphins are 2-0-0 so far and I can't wait for the Jets tonight on NBC. Have a good night! Sorry if I'm keeping you up!
KL71: I think I would much rather let others do my driving too, especially in cities like Portland.. Biddeford is a lot like Sanford now, i think when the larger plastics and electronics company's left those arias it left an economic vacuum of sorts dramatically affecting their standard of living. I love my little town because i don't have to worry about locking my car at night or teenage want to be gang banners looking to bolster their rap sheet by vandalizing private property.. Sounds like you are pretty near the middle of things up here, I don't think I could handle that well anymore. I lived in NYC and Chicago for a while when i was younger. I enjoyed it then but i think i have grown to appreciate the quiet life. Oddly enough I could never get myself to follow professional sports though I was very active at the scholastic level, if I wasn't on the field my head couldn't get into the game. By the way, no worries.. I'm enjoying this, and i rarely sleep well anyway, perhaps as it gets cooler that will change. Thank you all for the warm welcome. It seems like you have a great community here..
Hello! It will be great to see you around the forum!! You seem interesting, and your living is quite quiet? How do you manage to stay so lively? Hahah, I'm just rambling on..... Welcome! I hope you have a good time here!
Nicoco; It's nice to see from you too.. I'm probably more unusual than interesting, but I will gladly take the complement (thank you). My living (by way of life) is very quiet. I have never been one to draw alot of attention to my myself publicly. I ware the same solid color t shirts and jeans or shorts every day. I think it makes me as unremarkable and subdue as possible I even drive a mini van to avoid attention while on the road. (its the nail that sticks out that gets hammered down) My living (economically) is primarily supported by a military pension so I don't really have a very demanding schedule to maintain. I occasionally supplement my income with odds and ends jobs but often barter my work or give it away (if the recipient seems to be in greater need than me). Dont get me wrong, if i deal with someone who lives in excess by the dollar they wont be getting off easy by me.. I have a scene of balance i try to maintain, when I feel I am within it i find it very gratifying. I have been doing relatively well with that lately so it helps keep me in that lively spirit.
wild-flowers: Thank you. That Bang Face Weekender looks like quite an event, from what i read biased on a quick web search (I was completely unfamiliar with it before i had read your post). Is this years theme the same as last? Is it anything like Burning Man in the U.S.? Regardless, I hope you have a great time, and I look forward to seeing more of you around here.
I am having a little difficulty figuring out how to leave public messages on peoples pages.. Is there a way to hold private conversations here as well? (not that I have anything to hide, just doubt everyone wants to be forced into sifting through my off topic comments in threads)
Still haven't figured out the public or private message thing, and now want to know how to give rep too (have gotten in some great debates that deserve recognition)
