I don't know what the hell to call it, or what it looks like, lol. But, it looks alien like, and i dig it. It's made of white ash, is hollow, and has two "root" type legs that connect to each other. Again, it's all one piece. If you could see the bottom, it comes down to a point, so it looks a little like a turnip shape from the side.....that's hollow.....and sits on legs.... with tree bark around the top, haha. Yeah, it makes no sense.
thanks, i forgot to mention, i carved all the depressions around it so that i could get a couple of "eyeballs" on the sides, created by the grain itself. You can only see one on here. So, now we have an alien turnip, with eyes, HA!
I'm not saying that at all, I like it. The top makes me think of an open mouth, then beneath there's the round belly, then beneath that the delicate base reminds me of the lower intestines.
haha, that's cool. I was just messing around, but i HAD to have the explanation. that was a first! thanks for diggin on it. When people ask me "What is it?", no matter what piece it is, i tell them it is a vessel to be filled with your imagination.
Yeah, this is tops... I saw your other threads but never got around to commenting. I really like it, especially the top where you left the bark intact. Just nifty.
i really, really love your work. I wish i were in a financial situation where I could be a patron of arts, i would offer you hundreds of dollars for each piece ive seen from you. its all so very naturalistic, quirky, and beautiful.
I remember now why i love this forum so much. I wish i had stayed hanging around here the last few years. You people are awesome, and are art in itself. Thanks so much. This piece sat around with a 2" thick flat bark rim on top, and no "root" type thing on the bottom, for over a year till i got tired of looking at it, lol. So it's the result of just "getting it over with" so i could move on to something else, without a bunch of half finished projects laying around. As if i don't have like 20 things sitting around here still half done, lol. But that's the way i roll.....haha
on facebook yesterday, another woodturner friend who has to deal with the same question, posted a comment on my art album asking me "these are great and all, but what do they do?". I told him that they are for putting your hand in, while drinking a cup of coffee, while examining the worth of your existence, and if it will EVER mean more than it does at that exact moment. His reply was "ah....wooden contemplation mittens, those are so overdone" so now that's what they are, everyone. wooden contemplation mittens. works for me, lol.
Carve the middle out (leave the indents for windows) and use it as a fish bowl holder. Do that and I'll buy it.
