    The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced just one week ago, but it's greased and ready to move, with a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday. If people don't speak out, US citizens could soon find themselves joining Iranians and Chinese in being blocked from accessing broad chunks of the public Internet.

    This opens the door to censorship and control of the internet. How long will it be before Hip Forum is banned and taken down???

    Sign the petition!

    The same thing's happening with a proposed media-tribunal in South Africa. Political commentators are saying it's a done deal. Fuuck.

    I knew shit was getting fucked up when the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT insisted CraigsList remove the adult section. It's not like that shit isn't sketchy and something I feel attached to but it definitely speaks volumes about shrinking of freedom.

    Yes the ongoing expansion of gov't control over society continues unabated. This is one of many insults to Free Speech that have been coming down since the Bush admin.

    That Obama supports this is a shame on him. Of course there are reasons why the gov't might want to shutdown all or parts of the internet when there is an attack. But blacklisting? Didn't that go out with McCarthy?

    Once again it is business interests that are running this country. Freedom is something we used to have, but our enslavement continues to progress as planned.

    yeah, and even if enough people sign this, how many is enough? what if there are enough signatures? what then? does it just negate the bill?
    This smells like straight information sniffing to me.

    Ok, if you notice in the article it does say that this act was just introduced a week ago and the article is dated Sep 28,today.
    Then notice that it is the first and only campaign on the DemandProgress petition site and that site does say they are just starting.
    My inference by all this is that this petition site was created in response to this act and it is most likely less than a week old itself. That would explain why it is not on Aaron Swartz's personal site considering that it does say on the home page of his personal site that it was last updated April 15, 2008.

    As far as the information collected on the petition it is less than is collected on a paper petition.
    the reason they are collecting the info they are is as follows;

    Name=obvious
    zip code=constituency
    e-mail address= on many online forms of this nature an e-mail address is acceptable as a substitute for your actual signature and serves as a means to "follow-up" on a petition.

    Often when petitions are passed around and then presented to the courts, a random sampling is taken and the signatories are contacted to verify the legitimacy of their signature. This is not to invade privacy or anything, it is a means to prevent someone from "loading the ballot box" as it were.

    You guys are being paranoid. Go sign the damn petition.:)

    It says on the petition that they are need at least 60,000 signatures.
    Before a petition will be accepted for consideration, it must have a minimum number of signatures in order to show to the court that there are enough people interested in the issue to warrant the petition being submitted.
