True, we are all individuals. However putting yourself in some sort of group and sub-group is almost a necessary as well as an advantageous function. This usually requires a label of some sort to identify your group.

There are dozens of them - maybe hundreds - which allow you to be able to locate people of like mind and viewpoint.

Hippie, Redneck, Gay, Straight, Senior Citizen, Dopers, Communist, Liberals and on and on have to take on some sort of recognizable label to locate those of like mind.

Me - I'm a dad, husband, father, employee, HepC diseasee, former acid freak, Christian, tree hugging, liberal - and yes - hippie - if only at heart - and proud of them all.

I know one label you have - Libra.

 

Of course you have a tag on your name. You gave it to yourself. "individual."
It's a word that describes how you feel about yourself. Wear your label with pride.

 

I believe we need generalizations in society to sort out who you're interested in, and who you're not. If I call myself a hippy, the right sort of people for me are going to like that. if they don't, then I should not wish to be their friend.

 

wow! over the last few days on these forums my definitions of labells has been messed up so much i now feel that a labell is a paradox lol

The thing is that despite what our modern society tells us humans are tribal. The whole "You're a Hippie. He's a Yippie. She's a Punk etc..." thing is basically about Tribal Identity. Human totality and tribal identity are not mutually exclusive. The label doesn't cancel out your humanity. You are still no better or worse than anyone else.

Hippie is just an name for one large tribe with many sub tribes. It's kind of like Skinheads. If I even say the word Skinhead than you already have a mental picture of a Skinhead and an opinion of what he believes which may or may not be true. I have had friends that are Skins and I learned that there are different types of Skinheads:

The Neo-nazi: Obviously this is what most people think about when they hear the word skinhead.
The SHARP: Acronym for Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice. They dress like skins. Shave their heads like skins. Even listen to some of the same music as the Neo-Nazis but will crack a Neo-Nazi in the head with a bottle or try to have an intelligent debate with the Neo-Nazi about the holes in their belief system.
The Apolitical: Self explanitory.
The Spirit of 76er: These guys are just there to party get drunk and fight.

But the fact is that even though these people all identify themselves under the tribal name "Skinhead" they have very different philosophies.

People have this perception that Hippies are all liberal. Up until about 10 years ago Bob Weir was a Bohemian Grove Republican. I have also been told by inside sources that both Robert Hunter and John Barlow are gun toting Republicans too.

Hippies are just another name for an intellectual and artistic movement that has been going on probably since the dawn of man. Yeah it's just another label. But labels are important too. They tell you some of what's inside. Is that Shirt 100% cotton (Good to know if you can't wear cotton). Does that candy bar contain nuts (Good to know if you are allergic to nuts). Personally I like to know what I'm getting into. Wearing sandals in a mosh pit sucks.

Do you mean Skin Heads AGAINST Racial Prejudice? The missing word changes the context drastically.

I knew a couple of these guys, at the time the moniker was Righteous Skins, meaning a skinhead who stood up for freedom and justice for all... as well as a few brews! Deff against the grain of the stereotype created by louder, more abrasive aspects of skinhead culture.

The legacy of the hippies:

- There's nothing funny about Peace, Love, and Understanding.
- Peace is better than War, Love is better than Hate, and Understanding is better than Ignorance.
- An opened mind is a useful approach to life.
- People deserve to be loved, accepted, and cared for.
- Drug warriors and laws against drugs do infinitely more harm than drugs themselves.
- People should be totally free as long as they aren't hurting or causing harm to anyone.
- We should all have more respect, empathy, and concern for one another.
- War and violence suck and have no place in civilized society!
- Our government lies like a fucking rug and must be restrained by the people.
- The excesses of capitalism must likewise be restrained by the people.
- It is easier to mock, scorn, or trivialize

All these points make perfect sense and should still be a guideline for the way to live and let live today-
If the liberal media wants to call this the "Hippie Legacy"- -well ,I'm kinda proud - but it all seems like common sense- -
But a lot of so called political warriors out there are into the scare tactic talk (try talk radio for awhile), trying to draw people away from these words of Peace, Love, and Understanding

I met a few of them. I must say all the skinheads I met were angry and bitter. They put up a false front, acting like they're bad asses. "Don''t wanna mess wi'dem! Nuh uh!".

They may enjoy life a bit more if they weren't so angry and bitter.

 

Does the word Hippie really mean something significant or substantial? if so how about hipster? Do they mean the same or different? (They clearly have the same origins)... Is it the evolution from the origin that holds the significance? Did it ever stop evolving?
What is the new "In the know" culture called? What do they know that we don't? Are we no-longer in the know? Does that mean we aren't "hip" anymore?

I am clearly unclear on the subject...
