what do some of you have against phish?

it seems every time someone brings up phish, someone else has something terrible to say about them. iv been a loyal phan for years because to me, their music is fucking awesome, and i think i have a pretty good taste in music. so, please enlighten me as to why they suck. im not trying to be insulting or anything, im seriously curious

 

I think it mostly has to do with their fan base.

 

I don't like them for a few reasons.
The studio albums I find boring.
The guitar solos I find boring, incessant, and rambling and not good rambling it lacks the grace and intrest of the Allman Brothers.
The songwriting I find boring and lackluster, no well crafted lyrics that make me wish I had written them, no interesting use of words or literary devices.
I saw them live, 2nd to last show in Camden, they looked and played like they did not want to be there.


But its cool if you like them!

 

I think everyone thinks himself to have a good taste in music. I've never heard anyone say "Yeah I really really love band X but then again, my musical taste is actually pretty pathetic."

PRINCE CASPIAN ???!!

Heres what Im talking about, this is from billy breathes, and I cut out as much of the repated lines that I could to make it shorter.
I dont like how the cadence is similar in the first and second song. I dont like how most of the songs deal with "I" I dont like alot of the lines I feel they are frivolous.


Look I am not saying that they might not seem good to other people, but I have given them a fair chance, I listen to them everytime someone wants to show me them, I borrowed Billy Breathes and some live 3 disc set to listen to extensivly, I went to a show even. Nothing impressed me, and Im sorry, because I dont really like to dislike music. But I don't like Phish, they're ok but not somehting that I would go gaga over.

 

Madcrappie- What the hell is wrong with their fan base, its a bunch of kind ass hippies, with the occasional prep frat douchebags.

Duckandmiss- Nearly every one who likes or doesnt like Phish thinks their studio stuff is boring, seeing as they dont focus on studio albums as much as live performances. And their lyrics being boring and not creative?? Search phish lyrics on google and read some, they are awesome lyrics.

And really, what would an english professor who never heard the songs say about the lyrics? Is phish even really known for their sparkiling lyrical content? I dont think so?

What about compared to Bob Dylan?(ok not fair) but what about Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen, or even at the Drive in haha.

And really I do not think they suck (1. They play well. 2. Though that doesnt mean anything because Dreamtheater plays amazingly and they completley suck. haha) , Im sure I have liked a song or two, actually, everyone probably is going to kill me but I liked the new song that I heard on WXPN 88.5 recently, but not enough to buy it.

 

I enjoy alot of Phish's music but I loathe Trey and his enormous comsuming ego which has alot to do with the downfall of Phish if you ask me.


Trey is an amazing guitar player and could take his place among the greats if he'll get his shit together and quit being a lazy, whiny bitch.

What initally got me into Phish was actually Page McConnell's piano playing. I saw them a lot between '93-'98, and not once was I disappointed. But they seemed to have a far more balanced approach in those days, at least from what I can tell of the past few years.

 

I think Phish was a great cover band. I never had a liking for any of their studio stuff, played live or on the album.

 

All I can say is I think they suck at making original music, never heard any of their covers

 

i'm not going on offense or defense here... i personally LOVE phish, and yes they lyrics are silly at points. and they're also not the most talented vocalists out there. but, sometimes you have to look past lyrics and focus on the actual music being played. you cannot deny the awesomeness that phish has to offer as a band. even individually, these are extremely talented musicians...

 

Their studio albums aren't very good, some of the lyrics are silly (although some are good - check out the lyrics for Its Ice), Trey is an egomaniac, their live performances aren't consistent, blah, blah, blah.....................
But for those of us who love Phish, its because of the extreme musical highs that they can bring in concert. I've seen many bands, and no band has ever been able to move me as much as Phish has live. Post-hiatus though, the shows have been hit-or-miss.

 

well let me make my point here. I like phish. I like their music. hell, Ive been to a handful of shows. most of the fan base is pretty cool, but there are those few people that make the whole scene sour. Those are usually the frat kids that also hang out in droves at dave matthews concerts and widespread panic shows. Like someone said, most of them are douchebags that are pretty much there for the drugs and the half naked hippy girls.

 

I just love how people always state that phish's lyrics suck. no duh, the band themselves even know that.... the fans do too..... It doesnt matter. all it is about is the music, lyrics are kinda pointless anyways. most people go to shows for music right?? without the music its just boring poetry anyways.... lyrics are nonsense, no one really gives a fuck.

I don't have a problem in the slightest with them or their Phans, but I will never, ever listen to Phish

most wont understand this and will argue ... but when I hear them I can only see a band trying to be something they're not ... something another band is and always will be, but the Phish will NEVER be

all this said, understand, I've decided from like the 2 songs I've heard that they are great musicians, BUT, they make me sick
