How many people have read this?

    http://hipforums.com/privacy.htm

I'm not sure if I like this bit that I've highlighted in red:

Am I being overly cautious in questioning this?

    Submissions

All submissions to the Hip Sites*, including (but not limited to) postings, e-mails, creative works (poetry, stories, etc.), and other such voluntarily contributed material become the property of Hip Inc. to publish on websites owned by Hip Inc., in books or other printed materials published by Hip Inc., in related materials (compilations), advertising materials, and other materials generated by Hip Inc. unless specific instructions otherwise are included with the posting or submission. In other words, by submitting or posting something to any Hip Site* you are conveying a limited right to Hip Inc. to publish the work within Hip Inc.'s publishing domain. You still retain all other rights to your works and can publish them elsewhere if you choose.

It is understood that these contributed works are given freely, to be published by Hip Inc., in whatever manner it chooses without compensation to the author. Hip Inc. by accepting and publishing an author's work does so without charge for reviewing, editing, posting, or maintaining the work on the site or in other publications. It is understood that this free exposure and publication is sufficient compensation to the author.

People should read this but I'm sure many often don't.

I bet alot of people wouldn't post certain things in here if they were aware of that.

This part of the policy is not a problem for me as I have nothing of value to be lost by posting.

It could have an effect on others who post poetry and such.

This is why I do not post any of my art, or any of my truly good poetry here, I have noticed this a while ago. Isn't that lovely, they can just get all the good posts in the Politics forum and publish a book... rightfully so too, this is a private website.

i think that the people that post their material should at least be given recognition for their stuff ..such as artwork! Hipforum should give them some kinda credit....cant take it all for themselves!!! EVEN IF ITS A FRIGGIN SIGNATURE FOR THE AUTHOR....thats my opinion...peace

I don't really care. I've seen it, but I still don't care. It's not going to hurt me.

Full credit would be a hell of a lot better, but it's not something I'm overly worried about.

I know that I am new around here, so I hope it's alright for me to jump in with my 2 cents. :)

As a poet myself, it would really be deter me from sharing my works here knowing that by doing so I am giving up ownership of said works....

    Again, just my 2 cents.

Hm.. didn't read it to be honest and yes, I do think it's a problem.. I posted some pics here and I wouldn't like to see them used by others without my explicit permission.. I think that goes for a lot of the posters of the Real Kinky forum by the way. Ah well.. maybe ask Skip or one of the übermods for some clarifience? I guess it isn't has dramatic as it sounds.. that line.

Basically, in order for us to put your post on the Forums (aka. Publish It) you either have to transfer ownership of it to the website, or grant a license of it. Licensing is generally a PITA.

The copy of the intelectual property that you post here becomes the forum's to do with as it pleases. Generally what is done with this is to Publish it on the Internet for world access.

Technically, everytime someone opens a page on here they get a copy of the work, licenesed for them to view. If they republish the work then the Forums, and/or the Creator of the original work (e.g. your pictures) can issue a takedown order to an ISP, or persure sopyrite violations if printed.

Now velvet, this means that if you post a picture of your elbow on line, and I download it I can pretty much view it all i want to, for ever, I can enlarge it, wall paper it, what ever. but if I re-post Your Art (your elbow picture) somewhere else, especially for sale, i may be violating your copyrite.

Please note that I am NOT a lawyer. If you have concerns over your intelectual property rights, and the legal ramifications of our Privacy Statment, then please contact your legal counsel.

Most "art" sites have that same clause. This is their site. You are using it, free of charge as a place to freely post your work.

The Hipforums are not saying "We will now own the work you post and you can't do anything with it." No, they are just saying that "You will let us use it." It's not an exclusivity clause or anything... It's just saying that they can benefit from the work you post, for free in many cases, on their site.

Lots of art gallery sites have the same clause...
