Congratulations to Liu Xiaobo of China, winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace prize

He was jailed two years ago and is currently serving 11 years for writing some literature calling for peaceful change to the current one party system. He won't even be able to get his medal, or prize money in Norway!

Let me tell you, "face" is big in China, and I believe the Chinese governments actions are causing the party to lose a lot of face internationally. They are censoring any news of this and people fear for Liu Xiaobo's wife, which is another blow to a "stronger China". Most Chinese don't even know that finally, a native from their country has won the nobel peace prize and I find this to be very sad. This is an event that SHOULD be celebrated.

Chinese government - time to save some face on the international scene. This would be a small step in the right direction towards showing that you value human rights and a free and open society.

Saying that is kind of an insult to how hard this man has worked for a more free country, and one with basic human rights that most Westerners enjoy.

In the spirit of Alfred Nobel the price should be given for peace and the brotherhood between nations and not be abused as a political weapon. He is part of the offensive of US imperialism to destabilize China with terrorism- dont believe the propaganda in the western news.

 

Considering your location, wouldn't voicing your support be a tad risky?

I agree with your support and respect for Liu Xiaobo but my status as a citizen of the United States has me hesitant to criticize the People's Republic of China for human rights violations- not so much in disagreement with the assertion that such violations take place there- but more in reflecting on the premise that violations to not occur here. We are on shaky moral ground to be passing such judgment on other countries- at least IMO.

Would you support awarding the rescinded prize to another more deserving recipient?

 

In fact its the NATO who has its hands in the bloddy uprisings the last years in the provinces of Xizang and Xinjiang. Its known fact that certain countries try to destabilize other countries by helping terrorist groups, making propaganda via private media like in Venezuela ("The revolution will not be televised"). Do you know for example how much money the US spend to try to destabilize Iran from the interior? You would be surprised.

Weakening China from within: Covert Support to Secessionist Movements
Consistent with its policy of weakening and ultimately fracturing the People's Republic of China, Washington supports secessionist movements both in Tibet as wall as in the Xinjiang-Uigur autonomous region which borders onto North Eastern Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In Xinjiang-Uigur, Pakistani intelligence (ISI), acting in liaison with the CIA, supports several Islamist organizations. I don't know enough about him to make a fair assessment if he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.
Instinctively, he seems too middle-class and too much of an "intellectual"...
A brief glimpse at his credentials tells me he has traveled around the world, and has had the opportunity of "freedom" others never achieve.
How was this possible?
I'm not a big fan of the poster child's for these types of issues, and in this case would probably feel more praise/admiration towards a boat person, who had risked their life to get out of China. They seem more deserving.
I am aware for the moderately wealthy freedoms are allowed.
I'm surrounded by Chinese students where I live.
They seem happy and relaxed and can't wait to go home.
I understand the situation is a complex one, though.
Greater minds then mine have decided he has earned it, who am I to argue?

The US has a long list of despicable acts to its credit. But I don't think that means we should let China off the hook here. China has been sponsoring genocide in Darfur. According to Students for a Free Tibet, 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a result of the Chinese occupation. China has also been supporting the brutal dictatorship in Burma. It is the world's worst polluter. It is the top executioner of political prisoners and prisoners in general. While the US has plenty of corruption and exploitation of it's own population, China seems to me to be much worse.


The notion that Tibet's independence movement is the product of western interference seems to be pretty silly to me, given the fact that China invaded Tibet.
