I first found out about the murder of Matthew Shepard from the song "American Triangle" by Elton John. Which is still one of the most intense and heartbreaking songs Ive ever heard. I then watched a documentary about it. I was appalled, but definitely not shocked. I know what it's like to be different from the "norm". To feel vulnerable, and being fearful of other's potential negative reactions to me.

The world is a very cruel place, and it always was. I suppose things like Matthew's senseless murder just thrusts that fact into your face. Some people will always hate what they dont understand, and take that to extremes. Also, sometimes these hateful people actually secretly are what they hate, and they lash out at others who are strong enough to be open with who they really are.

I learned very early on in life how horrible our world can be. Especially for people who stand out from the expected norm.

    RIP Matthew.

Very well put, IS. :) And I admire your strength. ;) This is my favorite pic of Matthew - a day on the beach - living and loving life to the fullest...

But why? That's what totally gets me. It almost seems like real life has entered the Twilight Zone. If you are different, then be killed or kill your wretched self? Or forever keep it a dark secret? Where's Rod Serling when we need him most? I guess we'll just have to find solace in the black and white repeats.

In my opinion there are only two kinds of people good and bad .It doesn't matter to me if you are gay ,black, straight whatever .When it comes right down to it you are either a good person or a bad person .Matthew Shepard was a good person killed by bad people .I don't know why so much hate exists in our world .It disheartens me to read the paper or watch the news to hear what we are doing to each other .I accept everyone regardless until they treat me bad .My arms are open to welcome and love all good people .Our society has become immune to shock over murders ,abductions ,death etc. Where is the love ? People need to open their minds and hearts and accept others as they are .If we could ever do that this world would be a better place for all .I am sorry for my disjointed ramblings this just tears me up .

Yes, I am queer in more ways than one. :) Yara, everything you said is the real and brutal truth. Big time. But I often wonder if people want to hear the truth - or is it easier to remain deaf? I am often exhausted by my view on current life. Perhaps this is why many folks keep their minds and mouths shut.

Awww, don't cry, sweetie. His tragic death has made the whole world aware of homophobia and hate crimes. His death just might help to save other lives. Still, I wish he was on this earth. :(

Never saw this pic of Matthew before. Thank God for Google. :) Also, the Wiki entry is keeping his tragic story alive and well. Notice how the window pane seems to form a cross in the background? There are no accidents. He was loved. Big time. :)

Something that has not been mentioned (or I didn't see it) is the work his Mom has done to honor his memory and help protect other young gay kids. The Matthew Shepard foundation does a lot of education and advocacy work. I sure admire that mothers dedication to her son's memory and honor. As a parent myself I can't imagine how painful and wounded she must have been to have her son so pointlessly destroyed because of two misfits who offer nothing to the world. Here's to you Matthew's Mom, I admire you and the kindness you have offered others even though you were suffering yourself.
