That's my point, however you've got the logic the wrong way around. You only need one male to impregnate a whole set of females.
Females are the rate-limiting step, so it'd be far more effective to sterilise them instead.

Not really, though you can never be sure sometimes. Someone, somewhere will have seriously considered doing this, have no doubt .

The problem with breeding in our current interpretation of that's attractive now may not be doing anyone any good... By the time there are any noticable results we (you and I) will be too old to benifit from it, and latter generations may find other traits attractive than we do now...

this thread reeks of advocacy of eugenics. and i was under the impression liberals thought it was evil. and i feel those who are advocating this should lead by example and get their own selves sterilised.

So... for the next 15 years or so, you are okay with everyone continuing to have kids.

This is either very poorly thought out, or is nothing but another case of, "I don't care, as long as I get mine".

Before anyone should be advocating the sterilization of anyone else to combat overpopulation, they should be going in and getting it done to themselves first.

That's only the first part... Who is it that decides just when it is that we will start this, and just who is it that will decide when to stop doing it?

How do we make sure it isnt going to be a case of, those with enough money, can ignore this.

ANY 'solution' that is not focused on education and teaching people why they shouldn't have 10 kids, is bound to fail, either due to the process being hijaked by those with money and power, or when this period is over, people will go back to breeding like rabbits, all you will have done, is bought a few years....

There's more that is wrong with this idea... Just how do you plan on implementing this? Either it won't do anything, seems it won't include everyone in the world, and those who don't stop breeding will rule the world... Off the top of my head, I would say that would be either china or india, and this idea would just hand the world over to them and their decendants.... Unless of course, the first part of this plan was to take over the world and make one world government....

In order to implement the plan it would require the creation of a highly contagious synthetic virus capable of causing sterility in males.

Since the virus was created in a lab they would understand the underlying structure, microbiology, and genome, enough to create a vaccine. By simply withholding the vaccine there would be no more babies for while.

The scary part is it could take a couple of years for the CDC and the world health organization to finally figures out what the fuck is going on

Where in the hell did you ever get the idea that just because we make something, we know what we are doing? There are countless examples of humans going ahead with a project they thought would be good, only to discover that they didn't know what they needed to in order to control it.

That isn't even getting into the issue of the virus mutating into something other then what it was intended for in the first place.

Look at the mutations that the flu bug has gone through in the last 100 years, and it is still nothing but a crap shoot as to whether or not we have something to battle it (vaccines).

What you asked for was a viable plan and I just gave you one; the ability to create a vaccine is superfluous.

This attitude is what is wrong with the majority of the human race. This notion that you can come up with a plan without actually thinking through the consequences of it.

Brings to mind the slogan of a now non-existent company (they were bought out by a bigger shark). Their business was logging, their slogan was "Managing Your Forests Wisely". Their 'long-term' plan was based over 20 years... That is a small fraction of the lifecycle of a forest, so automatically it is false... yet to most people, they just accept it without putting thought into the future consequences... Some trees don't mature for 1000's of years, so any plan that doesn't cover at least that, can't even come close to managing them 'wisely'...

The same applies to, 'we don't need a vaccine for this to call it a viable plan'...

As for the part about me taking this too seriously... I realize that some of you think that everything on the internet should be meaningless and nonsensicle... Here's a shocker for you. Some people consider the net a communication medium just like any other, and have as much use for wasting time on bullshit through it (things they dont take seriously), as they do in real life.
