I have 20 baby plants that are about 7 inches high. I got a light, good soil and nutrients but I dont now what size pots to get. My freind who found them with me wants to plant them in little styrophone cups, but I think their too big for what and that it would be a waste of time. I told him we should just put them in a 2g buckets but he says the roots wont be as strong ??
Your friend is totally wrong. The bigger the pot, the bigger the roots can get. Therefore; the bigger the plant. Use the largest pots you have room for. Also when you say you have a light, what kind of light is it?
in a way, the tighter the planter in the beginning is better, helps bind the roots.. see in a larger pot right away the roots are going to go every where. This may make the plant weak cause lighting may make it grow to quick up top, and less quick at the bottom. Making it top heavy and easy to topple with strong wind or a moving accident.. While its a pain in the ass to transplant them, sometimes it just depends on what your doing and the experience you have.. just cause I grow well sometimes. dont mean I dont fail often. they are plants / an organism that can sometimes have a mind of it own..
with out a doubt gradually working up to the big pots is best......also will promote early flowering...why pour nutrients into a huge container and hope that some hit the roots
Google anytime you need grow info: Jorge Cervantes "topic". So I googled: Jorge Cervantes "containers", and this result came up first. http://books.google.com/books?id=fERzFsZhdxYC&pg=PA238&lpg=PA238&dq=jorge+cervantes+%22containers%22&source=bl&ots=t0Vy7uOFVp&sig=C0wQbBSyJYpSV8NRiXjsy1kP2kk&hl=en&ei=dD63TO3RNYOdlgep2rW8DA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=jorge%20cervantes%20%22containers%22&f=false You can pretty much read the entire book online this way haha. I purchased it but if I'm not near the book or online, I just google the information I need.
I was under the assumption that the 20 smaller plants were already in small pots...what are they in then?
i think you mean jiffy's...they appear to have a netting around them when water is added and they expand....get them into 4 inch container asap for a couple weeks..the net is around a 2 inch ball?...with the roots sticking through?....
I have to say that you have all the resources you need right here on Hip. Check out the growing forums. I think they would be very helpful. I have read several of those threads and they are good.
