PFC Jusin Stoner was tired of the guys in his platoon smoking hash in his tent so he went to his superiors. After a sever beating – the subsequent investigations revealed murder of Afgan civilians and taking of body parts as souvenirs (ie: fingers) by the platoon.

Though Stoner was not charged with any crime he was offered immunity to keep his mouth shut to the press. Immunity from what we have not idea.

I love our military. Who else could get away with something like that but the military. We won’t find something to prosecute you for if you won’t testify
    against the army.

The military says it doesn't want to encourage more violence and damage moral - so it covers this shit up. Let it out man - you can't be free of something you keep bottled up. Murder and torture are a plague that we could fight with common sense - put it in the light so it can be purified!!

These guys are facing life in prison, I don't think they're "covering it up." And of course they aren't going to charge their only witness to the crimes. They wouldn't have a case if they did that and all of them would get off.

Things like that happen in every war. Thats why war is never "bringing justice".

Serious difference of opinion here. I've seen the government cover this sort of trash up too many times. If the could have kept it secret they would have.
My Lai Massacre, Gulf of Tonkin, Abu Ghraib pictures, Pat Tilmon and on and on infinitum. The military does not want you to know what their soldiers do - it mars their image. Gets in the way of doing what they want to do to achieve their goals.

Every large group of people will have a few arrogant bastards that do inhumane things. The military doesn't condone activity like this, and will put your balls in a sling if they catch you doing it. But they also will try and not let it out, yes you are right on that. If these picturere were released it would cause an uproar and the end result would mean more NATO casualties. The insurgants wouldn't see it as free press, they would see it as adding insult to injury and would retaliate accordingly. It's not that they are trying to let these heinous assholes get away with it, its that they are trying to save the lives of other soldiers/civilians that do follow the rules. It's not all black and white, war is a lot more complex that most imagine.
