I am currently in high school, and i am often ridiculed for being me. I dress like the stereotypical hippie, and I often act like such. I wear the tie dyed t shirts not because I am trying to stand out, but because they are comfortable. My hair is long, because I want it to be, not because I am trying to make a statement. Oh, it looks like this --> :afro: Many people feel that this is wrong and try to force change upon me. I will be who I want to be, because that is me. Why is it that people today must conform to what one person wants? Why do we all need to look alike, and be the same person? Cant we all be who we want to be, and not have to worry about what anyone thinks?
I don't think that is something that is ever going to change. It is not just that society wants us to look the same it is us who want to and to fit in. You even mention the stereotype of hippie gear and yet you do not say that is looking the same as anyone else who does so. There are only so many variations on style and someone else is always also going to be sporting the same thing as you. Just be who you are comfortable being and let it go.
be who u r and don't let anyone tell u what that is. if God wanted us 2 all be the same he wouldn't have made us ssooo different.
Can you tell the difference between one worker ant and another. I think society wants us to be the worker ants for the elite - and the more people can be forced into their role the more worker ants are available.
The point is not to do what everyone else tells you on purpose. If you do, you just end up a shmuck, one of the sheep, a follower like most everyone else
Even in nature, individuals who are different from the group are usually a liability. It makes sense to have a commonality, both in appearance and behavior. Humans have that same tendency built in. And in their own way teens are just as conformist, maybe even more, than older people.
cant you wear a solid color shirt, even bob weir wears solid color shirt.. say this 10x real fast. : bob weir wears the worst work shirt to work...
Here is a thought that occured to me while I was tripping on Acid at a Phil Lesh show (how stereotypical). Have you ever noticed that if you watch TV there will be an anti drug commercial with some message of non conformity "like just say no", or "be above the influence", or any number of inane bullshit lines about how drugs rob you of your individuality. Then it's an advertisement to get a crowd to wear the right jeans or eat at the right resteraunt to be happy. It's like they are telling you to be individual on their terms. Here's the thing even the evening news is structured in a way to keep you anxious. Anxiety is an effective way to keep control. It is structured in a way so that you are only given one side of the story the side that they want you to agree with. I got into a situation where I had to watch CNN for a half an hour. They did a piece about "The Mosque at ground Zero". It seemed like 10 minutes of the report showed the protest opposing the mosque and 2 minutes of the protest in favor of the mosque. It reminds me of the old news footage I've seen of Vietnam war protests where they only show the most dirty funky motherfuckers and talk condescendingly about them. Peace Out, Rev J
Thats normal brainwash- most movies are pure brainwash as well. At the same time that brainwash is a great source for wisedom and spirituality if vou always take the opposite of the message
I thank you for the advice, but no matter what people say about me, this is me. Is it to hard to just accept me for who I am?
yes for them it is hard to accept you. and you have to accept that about brainwashed society. conforming has its roots deep in survival. it is an instinct that, though it has its purpose, its not managed or self governed by most people so they react by trying to get you to conform, to be part of their herd, going in the same direction as the rest of them.
You dont even accept who you are. You are constantly doubting yourself (no more than anyone else though) And interpreting how everyone else views you, well you are getting that wrong a lot of the time. So spend a wasted amount worrying what other people think, whem they dont even think that way. To you it will look like some people look down on you cos you look different, but sometimes whats really going on is they give you that snotty look cos they think you look cooler than them to everyone else. ...and sure sometimes it is more simple, they'll just give you that look because they think your a dirty hippie, but you cant please everyone But I must advise against tie dye, either a tie dye or Chey Guevara T Shirt, and you are trying too hard
I think there are many reasons... Mainly, I don't think we're really that different from animals when it comes to bullying, abuse, etc. Humans see what they perceive to be a challenger (i.e. you challenging societal norms of appearance), or a weaker member (i.e. someone who appears to have low-self esteem, is a bit unsure of themselves, self-conscious, etc.) of the pack and seek to dominate... USUALLY IN PACKS.
