    Predators
    Movie Blurb by Shale

I saw the first Predator movie in 1987 and have it on DVD (The Governors' Edition - Schwarzenegger/Ventura). It was a good sci-fi action flick with a new premise. I think I saw the sequel on TV once but it was forgettable so I'm not sure. I saw the first AVP movie in August 2004, only because my 13-year-old grandson wanted to see it while we were travelling together in St. Louis. He really liked it - I pointed out all the idiot plot holes - like the ones drilled into the ice that everyone just went into.

But, forget all that because this movie is a sequel to the original, which is even referenced by one of the "combatants." I didn't want to confuse you by referring to the combatants as predators, but that is what they turn out to be in this movie, predators versus predators.

It opens with people being dropped into a jungle - all killers of some sort - from Mexican drug cartel enforcer, Asian tattooed gangster, convict from death row, Chechen & African soldiers in some genocidal war, Centro-American commando and a mercenary. They find each other and band together to solve the mystery of where they are and why.

They eventually find out they are on a different planet and are being hunted. It is the alien predators' game preserve where they bring different predators to be hunted.

Well, the rest of the movie unfolds much like the original, with some humans being picked off by the alien predators and vice versa.

It is a good action flick and quite entertaining. Laurence Fishburne shows up for a while and the really disgusting guys show good qualities and the supposedly good guys show disgusting qualities.

It is one of those movies where you don't really care if the humans die because they are all killers anyway and that is what they deserve, as well as the aliens who hunt for sport.

I wouldn't think that Adrien Brody would be a lead in an action movie, but unless there is CGI magic at work here, he is really quite well built.

So, go and enjoy this movie. If you liked the original you will like this one as well, despite the fact that there are real actors in it and not just muscle men.

Wait Til You've Seen It Before Trashing It:

Y'know, I rarely look at the early movie news other than to note that something I might be interested in is being made. And, this sequel to Predator is a good example why one should hold judgment on a movie yet seen.

Like all these prejudicial comments that were made on two Sci Fi sites on October 7, 2009.

    "This....is...just...SO....wrong! (Shaking head in disblief!)
Now, don't get me wrong. I LIKE Adrien Brody. I liked him a lot in King Kong and various other things he's done.

It's just that I now have a image of him (sans shirt) rising up out of the mud to do battle (Wretching noises are now heard.....)"

(See pic of shirtless Adrien Brody)

"What a let down. The first movie starred a gang of hulking badasses like Arnold and Jesse Ventura who couldn't even kill ONE predator without him blowing himself up. Now I'm to understand that fucking Topher Grace and Adrian Brody are better suited to slay the deadly alien race? This is bullshit."

"I'm having a hard time thinking of 2 worse choices than Brody and Grace. I actually chuckled out loud when I saw the headline. My expectations for this movie were very low, yet I'm still disappointed. Also, what "Johnnyboy" said. I still think it could turn out to be a pretty good comedy. America has been completely and totally emasculated."

"WOW. This is awful news. I love Predator and Robert Rodriguez but Adrien Brody and Topher Grace? Just terrible."

Turns out that Adrien Brody was spot on for this character. Topher Grace did seem miscast thru most of the movie, being a pretty faced doctor and not a combatant, but he was utilized as well in that role. Also, by the fact that these were actors, this movie was better than the one with all the wrestlers and body builders shouldering their way thru an action flick.

    Just sayin'

Also, that shot of Brody's pecs & abs was not CGI:

To fight Predators, its star bulked up and gave up sex

It took Arnold Schwarzenegger to defeat the creature in the original Predator, but in the upcoming sequel, Predators, the central character is played by Oscar winner Adrien Brody, who isn't quite the same physical presence but who still bulked up and gave up everything for the role.

"I put on 25 pounds for this role," Brody said in a press conference Saturday in Austin, Texas, at the South by Southwest film festival. "That wasn't the point. They didn't hire me to be a bodybuilder. I'm not a bodybuilder, but I felt in order to be playful with it as well I shouldn't be strapped. It's not the physical strength that outsmarts an alien with energy-based weapons and high tracking skills and a culture of hunting and trophy hunting. You have to outsmart them."

Predators stars Brody, who plays against type as Royce, a black-ops soldier brought to a hunting planet so that the alien Predators can study the most skilled human warriors. Brody went all "method" to prepare.

"My nightly ritual was like poring over survival manuals and military and paramilitary training books," Brody said. "I was reading Sun Tzu, I was studying meditation, I was on a very strict diet, I wasn't drinking, I wasn't eating sugar, I wasn't having sex. I was very focused. I had to kind of go there, for me, because this is a tremendous opportunity for me."

    I really liked this movie.

I have to say, I grew up liking the original, but all in all it's a pretty dumb film... sort of like the Expendables and Commando were dumb films.

This is not a dumb film! There were twists and surprises up to the very end... not amazing surprises, but that they actually managed to do something with a sequel to a pretty dumb action movie is impressive.

Again, it's not exactly a work of art, but it is well-written and it does have something to say... maybe even more to say than the original did, considering the original was more about the cool 'light-bending' effect and the creature design than an actual story.

The lead character is probably about ten times smarter than Arnie was... and to be honest, he's more convincing as a military man as well... I mean, he actually has strategies and can manipulate people... that's something military men always like to do.

I'd definitely recommend seeing this movie.

Predator is the best movie I've ever seen. The original version of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the best version of that movie. But I wouldn't recommend it to my son, hehe, maybe in time:)

i saw it the day before yesterday and i must say that i didn't like it much. despite the action, the effects and the twists, this movie has failed to impress me. i'm still a bigger fan of the original predator. and this one is not a sequel. it is a movie with another plot. completely a different movie.
