The rep system seems to be working out fairly now. At one time it was rather abused by some and then it got turned off. I guess the easiest solution is don't give it and don't read it if it bothers you.
The rep thing is a joke. It's a total popularity contest. It seems that people who are really good friends with each other have the most green dots. Lots of people on this site have been active since before i joined and they have one green dot, yet they post something very intelligent and well thought posts each time. People who don't use the reputation green dots, keep it unactive, always seem to have the best posts. They are only a few.
i think for the most part, the people that have balls (ha ha) have earned them in some sense. whether it's being a good friend to a few individuals or giving good advice ina thread. i usually give pos rep for things that make me laugh. it's not like new people think "eh, i'm not talking to her/him b/c they have uniball".
I give them to people who post honest things and funny things whether someone has one or twenty I still read their posts just the same I also just dish it out randomly to people who post in the games section and sometimes I give it if I know it will add a ball like if theyre at 198 or 296 etc...
