Anton Lavey founded the Church of Satan (bare with me here). Satanism is often misunderstood as evil, intending harm for the sake of harm, but Anton LaVey and the church of Satan is more or less Atheist, being as they consider the conventional idea of God as irrational. Thus LaVeyanism/Church of Satan does not relate to theism. They value Satan as more of a spiritual force and do refer to him as a dark lord but more in an earthly sense. Humans are comparative to animals. They value aesthetics deeply, as well as pride as long as it is not counterproductive. They recognize ideas that they come across with the original philosopher. Example: Democracy is not purely American but originated in Greece. LaVeyanistic Satanist value personality and the aspect of who and what you are. They believe that the associations made with Gods and Demons come from inside of us, if we percieve Satan to be evil, then so he is, and vice versa. He sounds like a philosophical hippie IMHO, except Satanists are generally ruthless to those who piss them off. I'm not advocating for the church of Satan but thought it was interesting. An open mind is a good thing, but only if the input works for you. http://www.churchofsatan.org/worship.htm
Rofl go for it...not sure how your satanist friends if you have any would feel about it but go ahead.
Don't have any Satanist friends - well, no one has ever come out and admitted it to me anyway. Unfortunately I wasn't able to log in yesterday for Halloween...
anton lavey played a lot of different roles in his life time; we all do. the problem is, most people can not tell the difference between the roles they play and the self. lavey understood that difference. he grew up in a family of showmen. in his later life he spoke like a 'depth psychologist.' laveys' train of thought in his later life, sounds quite a bit like the 3 main founders of depth psychology. (adler, freud, and jung.) as for lavey being a "hippie" well... "emo," "goth," "hippie," "punk," and so forth. are all a form of shorthand called a 'label.' maybe lavey did have some "hippie" philosophy in his mind or soul however, lavey was never 100% "hippie. no one is 100% anything. we are all human beings and individuals.
the question is, why call it satan, other then to be in your face needlessly unkind and aggressive toward the fallowers of a small, albeit popular, family of faiths? god and satan are just names that humans have invented. something big friendly and invissible loves us. inventing names for it is only a way of demonstrating our own ignorance. why not instead, stop passing the buck of mutual ox goring? and let this world become the heaven it would be without it.
I think he was pretty cool. To him, the Christian devil was just a bastardization of Pan, the nature god. and they were making things like joy and music, things that are very positive, into something evil. He was an interesting person. He played circus music and owned Tigers. I don't see him as being negative, just eccentric. He didn't claim to have any supernatural powers or anything like that, so I don't really see how he was a con-artist. I don't know if he was a hippy, but he definitely was a part of the counterculture movement. I mean, he did live in San Fransisco in a black house during the 60's. I think its stupid how the Church of Satan charges over 100 bucks for inactive membership nowadays though.
He's a con artist because he doesn't give a fuck about the church of satan. He wants anti-social agnsty people to give him their money. He admited it before he died.
This discussion has gotten me playing "Hotel California" in my head: ...and in the Master's chambers they gathered for the feast They stabbed it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the Beast Last thing I remember I was running for the door I had to find the passage back to the place I was before "Relax," said the night man "we are programmed to receive You can check out any time you like But you can never leave." ~awesome guitar solo follows~
A bit off topic about the song- I am others were in the LDS for a number of years. ANd once you get to see what is there, you then see the church in your mind when that song plays. Really eerie.
