With an impending Michigan winter (anyone who has experienced one will know where I'm coming from), I'm in the market for a new coat.

Sounds kinda stupid, but I really don't care to spend this whole winter trapped inside because I'm always too cold to want to go do things.

So what I want to know is; does anyone have/has anyone had a coat that has just been incredible?

    As for the coat requirements:

    WARMTH is number one.
It also has to be under a hundred dollars. So long as it's in the general range of a hundred, I'm willing to spend a little more for quality if I hear good enough praise about a coat and I really dig it.
I'd prefer to avoid the coats that make that annoying scratching-rustling sound whenever you move in them or touch them or whatever. I think that may be out of the question though, as I haven't seen too many winter coats that aren't of that style.

As for style, I'm pretty open-minded to anything. Not guaranteed that I'll like it, but I'm typically pretty jive with just about anything.

So yeah. Let's hear what you guys suggest. Rep to the person who brings the coolest coat to the table. ;D

I love the weatherproof columbia coats. One with like 4 layers. They can get pretty expensive though.

Try the thrift store first. You might find what you are looking for cheap, or at least get an idea of the different styles and qualities there are to choose from. you might see a sweet ass coat but its way too small or big or worn out. you can then go search for a new one like that and you know what you want.

Me personally, I have always had the best luck with leather. Not over the top dressy leather, but medium length heavy duty leather coat. with a hoodie under it. It takes sub zero temperatures to start layering beyond that.

Orison, I JUST discovered the extreme Carharts before I refreshed this thread and read your post. I'm thinking that that's the one, unless anything cooler pops up on the radar.

http://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Mens-Extremes-Arctic-Quilt-Lined/dp/B002G9U7QK"]Amazon.com: Carhartt Men's Extremes Arctic-Quilt Lined Coat: Clothing: Reviews, Prices & more

Apparently that's what all the research scientists up in Antarctica wear when they're out working. All the reviews sound positive. I'm a little bit turned off because apparently it's sorta stiff. Flexibility is nice to have in a coat, but I guess it's probably worth it for not freezing to death.

Yeah, I looked at a few of them today. They're pretty cool. I've worn them before and haven't found them super warm though. The windproof aspect of them is nice. I think for temperatures in the 30s to 50s, one of the Columbias would be nice.

Haha, I don't mind. I was raised in Goodwill clothes, and now I can't afford to wear anything else. So yeah, I try and avoid thinking about who wore my shirts before I did. Pretending it's not really strange to be wearing someone else's clothes is a pretty important part of my life.

I live by a smaller city so the Goodwill & Salvation Army that I go to are both pretty sparse. They always have cool books, but normally, there aren't very many cool clothes in them.

Rarely see nice coats in there. A lot of blazers and other sport coats, but nothing like what I'm looking for.

Everything is always a really awkward size too. Makes it hard to pick things out.

I used to have a leather jacket. My two big problems with it were 1) It got super stiff and hard to move around in whenever it got cold & 2) It was always FREEZING when I'd have to put it on after a long time of not wearing it. The material on the inside of it sucked.

This is what you need to get. They issued these to us when I was in basic training, and they work amazingly well. This is just the shirt part of it, but you can buy the pants too. If you have these on under your clothes, any light coat ill suffice, so just get any coat you want and wear these under your clothes, and you're good. I'm assuming orison can also vouch for their ability to keep your body warm. They're cheap too:

Hmmm. I guess I trust that anything good enough for you is good enough for me. I've never been terribly impressed by the underarmor-style underwear. So this stuff is really that warm?

I think I might just order two pairs then. Probably a pretty good use of twenty dollars...

Yeah it's definitely very warm. It's not like the underarmor shit. The only downside is that it's not very aesthetically pleasing, so you really have to wear it under your clothes. lol

Haha, yeah, I gathered that from the nifty little thumbnail pics. The brown doesn't really help with the aesthetics all that much. I like that you can order the set for $10 though. My thinking is that if I get two pairs of those thermal sets, and then I get that Carhartt jacket, I'll be all set for winter. Well, once I find something that I can wear on my feet. Converse really don't cut it during the winter months.

Cool. Well I hope they work out for you. They're cheap and they definitely can't hurt. lol I'd have been lost during basic training, if I didn't have those mofos. It was so cold that my feet felt like they were frozen, but the rest of my body was warm:tongue:

Yeah. It gets cold as hell on a few of the days and a lot of the nights. The 90 degree summers spoil you, and then winter hits pretty hard. There's always so much wind, and the windchill is usually in the negatives. Makes walking to and from college so much fun.

I just don't believe that something that works that well has been out there this whole time without my knowing it. This would have saved me from countless colds over the last 18 years of my life. :D

    Edit:

Forgot to mention, I ordered the Carhartt. I think I'm going to get the hood for it too. I hate paying $25 for some stupid little thing that snaps on to a coat that should have came with a hood in the first place.

Once I can figure out how to use Paypal, I think I might order those underclothes. Actually, yeah, I'm going to get on that right now.

Thanks everyone for the input, it's much obliged.

I went to order these because they're super-cheap but as I was checking out, I found out that it costs $16 to ship a single set of those.

Any idea where I could find that set, or am I just going to have to suck it up and pay the shipping?

I don't think you've asked me before. Glad to hear that they're good for the weather here. These winters make me want to crawl into a [heated] hole and die.

I live down in the lower peninsula. I don't dare say my home town, seeing as there be rapistz on teh interwebs, but yeah, I live sorta close to Lansing (Assuming you've heard of it.)

The upper peninsula is sweet though. It's a really really long drive from where I live, so I've only got to go up there a couple times before.

You may be able to find them at an army surplus store. Not sure though.

Yeah, I found them online in a couple other spots, but everywhere else, they're at least twenty or thirty dollars, just for the shirt. Haven't found any sets :/

I may just have to suck it up and pay the shipping. I can't decide though.
