Hey y'all. I've noticed in some of the dready pics posted that some folks have dreads only at the ends of their hair. For example, there was a pic of a gal with her hair back in a ponytail, and I would've never known she even had dreads had there not been an additional pic of the back of her head/what was contained by a rubberband. How do you do that? If I had my way, I'd just let everything dread up, and it'd be easy bc my hair is hella nappy & thick, but for many, many reasons I can't right now. So how do you make it so only the ends dread? I always put my hair in a ponytail anyway. Thanks.

Maybe she just had locks in the back, and not the top/front of her head. This is how mine started. People didn't notice my hair until the top started tangling up. If you want this to happen, just stop coming that part of your hair and don't use conditioner or perhaps your nappiness can overcome conditioning... find out. And along the way you just might let the rest knot up too :D

I already don't use conditioner, but I do comb my hair. I suspect that, because my hair is so damn nappy, that perhaps I couldn't pick & choose which parts of it dread up & which don't. It looked like the gal I saw with dreads only in her ponytail had straight hair.

P.S. My reasons for wanting dreads are 1) my hair seems made for 'em, 2) it seems to go along with my (philosophical) anarcho-primitivism (yeah, I'm on a computer right now . . . we're each complex & a little hypocritical in our own ways), 3) they're beautiful, 4) where I live, it seems like it'd be easier to find my tribe, like a "hi, here I am, talk to me" because I'm not very good at meeting other humans. But, at times, it seems like they require a lot of fuss (even "neglect" dreddies) . . . much more than what I do now, which is brush my hair once a day for five seconds & pull it back in a ponytail. I'm on the fence about having dreads, for a few reasons. But maybe if I only had dreads in the ponytail-part of my hair, my "reasons" would disappear. Thanks again.

damn, and here i am a constitutional conservative, lol not anywere near the anarcho-primitivism...and yet i still have locks.guess i didnt read the rulebook on that one!!lol, i think you should go for it, no matter what reason you want them, being on the fence only delays the inevitable my friend, so just start now and be nappy!!

Stop combing them and don't fuss over them. I agree though, it does take more work than just being lazy. I used to put my hair in 2 braids and leave them that way for over a month before I took them out and washed or combed them. Now my hair is flying all over the place, unruly and getting caught up in shit.
I started 6 months ago and it still doesn't look like my hair is dreaded, only the underneath layer has some tighter fatties.
    Good luck!

Um. I was only giving MY reasons for wanting them. I wasn't implying that there aren't other reasons that each individual might have.

And no one has really answered my question yet. I'm asking if it's possible to only have the ends dread-up . . . and NOT the first five or six inches . . . meaning that starting from the scalp, there'd be five or six inches that weren't dreaded, but the last few inches (the part that goes in a ponytail, for instance) would be. Thanks.

Answer: All dread roots are different. Some people get their new growth forming dreads straight away, some people 's new growth doesn't dread at all. You can't make your dreads do either. That girl is just one of those dreadheads whose new growth doesn't dread.

    Hope this helps ^^

You could probly pull it off if you combed the roots and let the rest go. it may even help them because you would be pushing all the tangles down.
thats just my thinking im not sure that would work at all but it may be worth a try

The best way to get an answer would be to track down the lady from the photo and ask her :D

In general, what you are describing is not something that locks do. If one part is knotty, the rest will soon become knotty... except at the scalp. As DV said: each person's roots are a little different (usually a half inch up to a couple inches of 'regular,' 'straight,' hair).

As the owner of an exceptionally low quality set of neglect locks, I can telll you, the only fuss they cause is the pain and procrastination involved in cutting them.

Okay, that's more like what I was searching for. Thank you. It sounds like I probably can't have my cake & eat it too in this case. I would just neglect my hair, but I'm concerned about a few things: mainly that I have a young child in school, and I've noticed that young children in school, of all places, seem to have lice infestations; also that I don't know if I have to get a job during the summer, and that's probably right when the dreads would actually start to lock; the last main reason is that, although I want to draw attention to myself to meet some more like-minded folks, I also don't want to draw certain other kind of attention to myself (read: cops) . . . I live in a place where I would seriously stand out with dreddies. If I still lived in norCal, not so much. :) Anyway, that's why I'd like to have control over when ppl see 'em.

Cops are a problem with appearances. So are school officials, they would worry me the most, personally.

Locking just the tips could work... but would look silly and obvious as fuck, and they would break off.

Get to know your cops, i have become friends with some of the local cops and they dont bug me.

As for school, I have found office people at schools can be very rude, I have been asked to wait in the halls while other parents were asked to sit and chat while waiting for there child. Im not a mean or rude person so i dont know what the deal with that was.

As for lice, I cant tell you how true this is but B4 i let my 10 year old get dreads i did some reading about them and on many pages found that lice dont like locks, if you do get them it sucks because you cant comb the egg things out but they dont like locks much. I dont rember why that was like a year ago.

If you want controll over when people see them I would do just the underside though im sure over time you wont worry so much about what randoms think of you.

Rude, as in (according to quite a few stories I've read) treat your child in such a fashon as to set up a self fulfilling prophecy situation painting you as abusive or otherwise out of line in a legal sense, and/or report you to various agencies that need no proof of anything (because they're "thinking of the children") and who will make your life a living hell by trying to take your kids, mentally evaulate you (what kind of person wouldn't comb their hair? a junkie child rapist, that's who!) and other nasty things.

Not trying to sound scary, just saying, if you have children in school, be careful how you come off. Off course, the more independent thinkers there are, the more people become acclimated to seeing things out of the ordinary. Just try to be subtle about it.

I have had no problems like that at school. they are just rude as in telling people i dont impress them at all, ignoring me, forcing me outside, things like that.

The randoms are rude as in, wow i bet you were prity before you did that or i bet a lot of people think your hair is ugly (it was black and purple), and the few who see me and pull there child away from me like im going to A smack them or B try to take them.

but again I am friends with a few of the cops so that may be why my problems have been so small.

How far any given zealot will go to enforce their "values" on you, your family, and the world is going to vary... And some may not realize the life-ruining power that they have... But if you have children, you do need to keep this in mind.

If you do get lice in your hair when you get dreads, there are some methods (in the FAQ thread) to get rid of the lice, such as ACV I believe

    1. There are cures and concoctions for ridding locks of lice.
    2. If you listen to a 19 year old about parenting, you're an idiot.
    3. If you never use conditioner THAT's what your hair is "nappy". Know your hair and work with it not against it.
    4. People have different definitions of "nappy" pics would be appreciated.
    5. Since you used the word "nappy" I'm going to assume you're at least partially African American. If you're not, stop using that word.
    6. If you're using a comb that has teeth you can't stick your finger in between, throw it away.
    7. Honestly starting locks is probably something you shouldn't do right now. African American hair can be fragile and if your hair is already damaged (it sounds like it is) they could very well snap off because your strands are already weak. Up your water intake, starting working with your hair and come back to it in six months.
