I moved to Cali after the voter registration deadline. I voted absentee in Colorado.
Here are my concerns with Prop 19:
it allows cities to place limits on how much can be sold/taxed.
Use in public places would be banned. Right now, it is ignored or handled in-house at venues. One venue security guard said it was all on the user, whereas tobacco (barred in buildings) is a definite no-no.
Do we want to make it a cop-involved offense? Do we want more people potentially being arrested in parks and on sidewalks?
The taxes merely go to the running of the taxing programs/administration.
Why limit where this cash cow can give milk?

I do agree that legalization can be the best option.
Just not as this is written.

I think the backers could come back with a tighter proposal next election.

So when do we get to see the results of this, I can't wait for the riot/party in berkeley when we find out which way it went

btw I just read that until my 21st birthday in several months, if my boyfriend is caught smoking a bowl with me he gets fined 1000$ and goes to jail for six months. YEAH FUCKING RIGHT, that cop isn't doin shit without a fight.

on results: follow a reasonable news station or a big city newspaper like LA Times or a SF paper. Expect unofficial results at least three to five hours after polls close. Since this will be close, I'd not expect decent results until 1 or 2 am, possibly tomorrow morning.
Does anyone know how long it will be for the State secretary of state to certify the results?
In Colorado it was a couple weeks.

I have no opinions on telly stations because I'm stunned with how bad news coverage is here.

anyone know of watch parties for the proposition?

I too have a strong feeling it won't pass.

Canada and the US alike are both going to become more conservative in the near future. Then we'll we wishing we had guys like Jean Chretien and Bill Clinton leading the countries.

As a medical marijuana patient and a friend to a few growers in the SF/Bay area I'm stoked that this did not pass. We have it pretty good out here. I think passing this law would have brought a lot of unwanted attention from the DEA. Obama specifically said he would come down on Cali if we passed this law. Personally I think the people that wanted it legalized did not do their homework on this one. We've got good prices, GREAT weed, and (in SF at least) it is no big deal, I've had a conversation with a cop while a smoldering joint was in my hand. He just gave me a wink and a nod and was on his way.

I got that same impression. The Drug Czar as much as said that if it passed they'd come down hard on growers in the state. In the short run that would've been bad for anyone they targeted. In the long run though 19 passage may have done U.S. society in general a service. Marijuana legalization will have to go through the Supreme Court before it can truly become law-of-the-land. The U.S. Supremes right now are mostly conservative dickheads. But they do try to champion states' rights. They may take that approach to marijuana legalization. On the other hand, there's no love from conservatives toward what they see as the Peoples' Liberal Utopia of California.

The time isn't quite right yet for marijuana legalization. But the growing support for it demonstrated by Prop 19, and de-criminalization in a growing number of states, shows that we're taking big progressive steps forward on the issue.
