Hey, guys. I live in Massachusetts and go as many places as I can without shoes—including school. I'm a sophomore in college now, and a lot of people know me in that place simply because I don't wear shoes. Only recently did someone come up to me telling me that, according to school policy, I need to be wearing shoes. Naturally, I walked away, and nothing much came of it. More and more lately, though, people have started mentioning that. I've made an appointment with the school's vice president for tomorrow . . . . . . but, I'm wondering, is there anything else I can do to solve this issue? I'm in school most of the day, and being forced to wear shoes is something I will not put up with, but I'm not sure exactly how to approach the situation. Any help? Suggestions from people who've been through this before?
Tell them its part of your religion, most people respect that and since it hasnt been an issue, at all, I dont see why they would deny you your "practices". Any person in the right mind knows best not to interfere with someone's religious deals because of the possible claim of a hate crime or whatever. Thats the route Id take. Unless a school official said to you that if you dont wear shoes youll suffer some sort of consequences I wouldnt even bother talking to the president.
If I've read this correctly, you have made the initiative to speak to your VP. Unless called in, I wouldn't bring up the topic. That way, they have no reason to single you out. Cancel your meeting.
Flip-flops are the crutch for those who are unable to or cannot make themselves go barefoot. As much as I do not want to say it, they might be the solution if this goes against you. Wear them in the buildings. They fall off easily when you are sitting. Not a win...not a total loss.
Well, the issue was that the VP was going to come to me. Members of staff have been complaining about it—I'm close with the nurse, though (which is who the VP came to, first). She said she'd speak with me, first, so I wouldn't get some notice from the vice president or something.
Yeh, I am in agreement. Schools at the bottom of it all are businesses. They exist to make money so even tho they might not get too bothered about a transfer threat from you, they might. If you include your friends in that threat (real or not) it gets attention.
Ok, I think we know that's a bit ridiculous. What if this person has great grades? Throw it all away for feet? I can't see that the VP has nothing better to do than to meet with you about your feet. Stay the course. Do nothing.
