does anybody have any good books on homosexuality to recommend? i don't just mean scientific books, also historical for example, anything good out there really. i know quite a few good ones but i'm always looking for something new or something i've missed. i'm currently reading this and recommend it to others as well: http://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Friendships-Homosexuality-Renaissance-Sexuality/dp/0195122925/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1289401830&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: Forbidden Friendships: Homosexuality and Male Culture in Renaissance Florence (Studies in the History of Sexuality) (9780195122923): Michael Rocke: Books: Reviews, Prices & more this one's very good. very detailed about how things were and altogether an interesting and enjoyable read.
the bible. JUST JOKING =P =P =P hm. I don't know. there are gay bookshops in my city, and also normal bookstores with gay sections. Maybe one of those big chain stores like borders/dymocks has some? Perhaps a book on the ancient middle eastern millitaries, some of which were gay ^^ such as the sacred band of Thebes or the Greeks =). And so many military tacticians were eunuchs it's bizzare =P
i've read a book about gays in the holocaust, and it was excellent. it had a few stories of certain couples through real written letters. there are probably tons of books dealing with homosexuality and the holocaust and is an interesting topic so check it out i guess. but for a specific fictional book, i recommend the book The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon by the author Tom Spanbauer. fictional story, written very interestingly and is super unique. it doesn't emphasize gayness like in your face just blatantly cheesey gay, which is what i like (that it doesnt do this). it's more like a story thats great and happens to have a sexually open mind. its great, and was a total page-turner for me. i even got sunburnt cuz i was sitting outside and couldnt stop reading. but you'd have to order it online.
While it is not a page turner, John Boswell's, "Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality" helps explain why much of our heritage as gay people has been lost to us. Boswell researched the role christianity played in the destruction of gay art and literature as well as looking into the contradictions of the early church when same sex relationships were blessed into the era of repression which we still "enjoy". As much as any other book I've read, this book helped me understand just how much effort has been spent repressing gay people. Yeah, I know...not a news flash but this man had some serious credentials. I found it enlightening and informative. I enjoyed the setting and play in "At Swim, Two Boys" by Jaime O'Neil. There are many others but I don't have them at my fingertips so I'll need to do some digging to find them.
i have this book too. it would be a good one too. i've only read a little of it but it has a historical interesting setting, has a sophisticated writing style, and looks pretty lengthy enough
Anything about Sappho, Sappho's Leap, The Tenth Muse, etc. Its very inspiring, especially for lesbians and bisexual females.
I might have a look at this one. The last I read was a book written by a gay guy, about how the Bible doesn't condemn homosexuality like religious folk tend to say it does. That was pretty interesting and made for good debating with some Christian posters on another forum.
Hey Gypsy, This guy Boswell(Harvard educated) was able to read/translate archaic languages and understand the meanings or ambiguities of terms/phrases in common usage from the era when things were written. The guy is a bible beaters worst nightmare because is is scholarly, unemotional and drags out facts the modern wingnut bible freaks wish would go away. Its been in print for 10 plus years so should be available at a good price.
While we're going on about books how about any adventure/thriller/suspense stuff with gay characters. One of the major name detective writers has a gay investigator...his sexuality never really plays into the plot too much, just gives the character a bit of flavor and insight that sets him apart. can't remember the author now but I'll think of it.
