So, I just got back a few months ago from travelling across the country by myself. I packed up my car and headed west and spent three months exploring this great country. I had a lot of awesome times and met some wonderful people and really had a lot of time for introspection and contemplation. It was wonderful. The downer is, now I'm back and living in the "real" world. I have a job-it's okay, I don't love it but I don't hate it, but I miss the freedom of the road. I don't really feel like myself living every day the same, going to work and doing the same things and then coming home. I want to be somewhere else in a bad way. How do people just pick up and leave and go do whatever they want? A certain amount of money is required to travel-I don't want to starve, and while I'm comfortable with the idea of homelessness, I still want to have somewhat a sense of safety. Is it possible in today's society to really drop out? And how do you find satisfaction and meaning in day-to-day, seemingly mundane life? Any advice or anecdotes are appreciated
From 1973 to '78 my partner Jim and I did a lot of travelling around the world (2 trips to Centro America - 2 trips to India, one overland from Europe) We would work for half a year or so, then take off for several months. This was a pattern and doing direct care work in psych hospitals and group homes always guaranteed us a short term job when we got back. We worked in South Florida and New Orleans in these jobs, then hit the road again. When you give up your apartment and all those living expenses, your money goes further, especially back then when we went to the Middle East and Asia, which was really inexpensive. So, just bear with your work situation while you plan on your next trip. Do you have a travelling partner? Somehow I found travelling with a partner more fun than going alone.
What is the source of satisfaction, meaning... freedom? :sultan: When you want water, go to the well. Lao Tzu ZW
Know that you are spirit and have the freedom to act on it every day, no matter if you live inside or outside the wheel. The conditions are within. Each world will show its mundane day-to-day surface on top when spirit gets out of sight. Make your world real - make it a growing experience. Doors of opportunity will show when you are ready for change.
Life tends to get in the way of the wandering soul. You can stay free in most Federal campgrounds and a lot of state parks as well. A partner would be a good bet also. WOOOFING is a way to stay on farms and pay your way with work, most offer food and lodging in exchange for work. Gotta check them out first though. A van or small camper would make life more bearable for you while you travel . Hang in there and search for your pathway, it will come to you when you least expect it.....;-)
I've always wanted to go WOOFING, do you know where a good place would be to look/apply for opportunities? I stayed in tons of federal & state campgrounds on my last trip, as well as a lot of national parks...so fantastic. And although I definitely see the convenience in a van/camper, I like traveling in my little car
