In the past few months, our tap water here has smelled very strongly of chlorine. And in the past few days it has gotten even worse, like they've retreated it even though there was already massive amounts of chlorine in it. It's to the point where it smells so strong it almost makes me nauseous. I'm obviously not going to drink it, not even through a brita filter... But I was wondering if anyone knew if I could drink it if I boiled it. I'm a big water drinker and lately I have been drinking a lot of my partner's soda because I can't turn to water and that's NEVER GOOD.
Yeah, I wasn't sure... I was using the filter some when it just smelled a little chlorinated, but I still wasn't sure I should've been drinking it... So I just kept going for the soda. Now, though, it's like SUPER STANKY so I wanted to make sure it was totally safe. That smell just really freaks me out. Thanks again! =D
Just for a little update.. I boiled the water and stuck a few cups in the freezer so I could drink it sooner than later... I let it cool down some and don't smell the chlorine AT ALL! =D thx!
If you just want to reduce the chlorine smell boiling the water will work....so will aerating and letting it sit for a day. However if you are trying to remove the chemicals from the tap water boiling will only remove a few....water treatment plants use 3 chemicals for water treatment ...free chlorine, chlorine dioxide and chloramine. Each chemical varies by region and water type. Chloramine does not boil out of water, same is true with flouride. Also tap water has other chemicals of chlorine that have been formed as a result of the water treatment it, by products if you will.... some of those will not boil out either. So for long term health ....use a carbon filter If the water starts to smell like chlorine after you use the filter for some time....the filter most likely needs to be changed. Filters are good only for a limited amount of gallons and that varies by type and size.
I agree with purple-moss, carbon filter is the way to go. If your out and about you could try water purifying tablets...not sure how good they work, but I've seen them advertised in different places. Even with them, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't affect the chlorine...I could be wrong though.
I usually just let it sit on the counter for an hour or so, and it evaporates out. No chlorine taste after that, but my tap water doesn't have a really strong smell, either. Yours may take longer.
Thanks guys! I will also try and nab up a carbon filter... It took forever for my water to cool down last night and I started to get a bit irritated! When I go for some water, I usually don't like to wait!
