Ok I smoke occasionally, have dreadlocks, go to glastonbury festival in th uk every year, use my parents vw campervan all the time and like to spin poi. But funnily enough, I never considered myself a hippy until my sister pointed out all of these things. Is being a hippy a lot like being a love? No one can tell you that you're a hippy, you just know you are?
The only official rule to being a true hippy (not some poser) is to refrain from wiping your anus after bowel movements.
well urban dictionary says... someone who has a bright outlook on life and cares about the world instead of trying to ruin it. they are often member of groups such as greenpeace and antiwar groups that care about the environment. they reject the established culture and are a subculture originating in San Francisco in the 1960s who advocated universal love and peace, usually had long hair and used soft drugs, usually listen to acid rock and progressive rock music, reggae music such as that of bob marley.
Who thehell said I was a hippy? I'd rather be a "Zippy". Remember him? A stuffed black monkey for little kids. Except I wanna be a BIG Zippy. Tht way the mommys will love to hug and cuddle me all night long. :mickey: I only smoke when I'm on fire. I prefer using padlocks. (yeah, I know what it is. My hair is short). I don't. I thought the Brits didn't beleive in having fine works of art on the road....? Spin "what"? Sounds like a great sister. I dunno. Since when have I been a hippy? What's this thing about labels that folks have? Want a label? Get me your mailing address and I'll send you a soup can label you can use. Seriously. What is this thing about labels? Just be yourself and you'll be happy. Seriously. Can of soup. If I sent you a soup can label, and you pasted it to your forehead, would you then be a can of soup? Walk around town with that and folks will think you've gone off the deep end. You will still be you. A human. And wearing the soup can label won't make you a can of soup, though it may make you look like a nut. What is so hard about being yourself? You're young, and you can be a happy joyful peaceful you. (I quit after I was caught putting Soylent Green labels on food in the grocery store back when I was a kid)
John Trudell has a speech in the movie Thunder Heart: "We choose the right to be who we are. We know the difference between the reality of freedom and the illusion of freedom. There is a way to live with the earth and a way not to live with the earth. We choose the way of earth." He was talking about the American Indian Movement but it can just as easily applied to hippies. Peace Out, Rev J
Hey man I'm half Indian. Actually there was a line in the movie Smoke Signals, "The Hippies all wanted to be Indians anyway so Arnold Joseph was the Greatest Hippie of them all." Peace Out, Rev J
Wabanaki on my moms side. Unknown tribe on my dads. The Canadian Government did an experiment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to see what would happen if they adopted Indian infants into good Christian families. The problem was they never kept a record as to which children went where. Peace Out, Rev J
I often go on about the whole issue of the label of hippie being ironic for a bunch of people who call themselves hippies to be tossing around and debating the value of. There are few things that I can think of that when I see someone, make me think, that person must be a hippie... Or at least so I thought... There is something that I do consider to be a staple of what being 'hip' is all about... That is the ability and desire to stand up for what you feel is right. Being a hippie (to me) has always been about people who choose right over wrong, even in the face of opposition from the status quo. Two people can do the same thing, and not both be considered hip (to me)... A few examples... Ghandi... to me, he was a hippie... Those who follow(ed) him, are NOT. Christ (some versions) was a hippie... christians are NOT... Buddha was a hippie... his followers are NOT... There are many other examples from the beginning of recorded time of people who truly were hippies... They all saw something wrong and stepped up, usually to threats of persecution and sometimes even death. The stood for what they beleived was right and FOUGHT to make it so. During the 60's... there were indeed a lot of people who were truly (to me) hippies... But most of those that were labeled as such then (and now), we're not even close to being hip... People can whine scream and bitch all they want, about how they are a hippie, because of the way they dress, the bullshit philosophies the spew, the music they listen to or the drugs that they do... but it will never make it true... When you see a 'wrong', do you step up and do or say something about it? If yes, then you may be a hippie... Do you wait to feel out what others think before you step up? You are definitely NOT a hippie... At least, that's the way I feel about it.
